Eight years after opening with great fanfare, San Francisco's city-subsidized, $12.3 million Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center is on the verge of foreclosure - and is asking the cash-strapped city for a $1 million line of credit to help bail it out.
And from the looks of things, the center will probably get it.
The thinking: The city has already spent about $5.7 million on the building at Market and Octavia streets and needs to "make sure it doesn't go under," said Supervisor David Campos, who along with fellow gay Supervisor Bevan Dufty is seeking approval of a $1 million "mortgage relief" fund.
Even that, however, might not be enough to save the center.
According to a new report by the Board of Supervisors budget analyst, the center could need even more public funds to cover the nearly $3 million that it still owes on its mortgage.

Just wondering.
LBGT Center about to go down on public.
Do I understand this correctly, there are insufficient numbers of LGBT San Franciscans to support the LGBT Support Center? Exactly, what does a LGBT Support Center do? Any guesses?
You know, there are several ways to read that phrase, none of them pleasant.
hmmm, bacon...
Get rid of the “GBT” and Howard Stern would probably fund it.
...but of course.
Excuse me while I pick my jaw back up from the floor. PUBLIC FUNDS are paying to support this garbage.??!!@#*&%* OMG. Sick, sick, sick.
It is no wonder that California has become a dead state.
The LGBT could set up a booth and solicit funding at the Folsom Street Fair.
Man...imagine how bad the LGBTQIA center is doing.
Unfortunate choice of words.
LGBTQIA
I got the firt four, but the last three is a mystery to me.
As far as I know, the facility is underused. Some 12 step groups meet there, I think.
No Boy Scout meetings or Church bingo nights? Wonder why?
You mean all the pissin’, moanin’ and groanin’ by the gays and they won’t even support their own special center?
Where are all those lovely Hollywood types to fill the coffers?
They should be self supporting by their own contributions.
Public funds go for this, shouldn’t the public get a say in the running of the place?
Rep. Barney Frank was quoted as supporting a back-door funding solution for the center.
They should take it in the rear like the rest of us. They are use to it more anyways...
Things are tough all over.
Ok, so the deviant center,,wants a loan from the city who has no cash and is cutting employees, who will then need to get the money from a STATE with no money,,, who is scheming to get bailed out from a Federal government who is also broke?
Do i have this straight? I must be missing something.
No...it's not a joke. I've seen it on pamphlets at my doctors office.
