AU.S. toddler accidently killed herself after mistaking her stepfather's handgun for a Nintendo Wii control. Cheyenne Alexis McKeehan, three, shot herself in the stomach with the .380 caliber, semi-automatic weapon after finding it lying on a table in the living room.
Her mother was sitting at the computer just a few feet away while her three-month-old brother was also lying nearby.
Investigators today said that the child had probably mistaken the weapon for a Wii control.

How could this happen? I mean, Cheyenne is only 3 years old. She couldn't know the difference between a .380 cal handgun and a Wii control gun.
It's her stepfather's fault for leaving the gun on a table, but I'm sick of seeing commenters post about Americans as unworthy of owning guns. It only stigmatizes the law-abiding citizens.

It takes just one @sshole like the guy who left his gun out to tragically cause a loss of the life of one and the liberty of millions.

No one I know leaves a gun on a table in a house where there are children. It should have been holstered. Kind of sounds fishy to me.

Is everyone certain this was an accident?

bleeding hearts who believe because a few can't take care of themselves obviously none of us can. Thats kind of like the Prius guy on the news that was unable to shift his own car into neutral. back in the 60s Carbuerated cars often lose the throttle return spring and everyone knew to stick your toe under the pedal and pull it back up. But now its 2010 and we have "progressed" to a culture of helpless sheep.

The players are getting ready for “the” gun bill. Enough ‘victims’, one certain person, in a specific place at just their right moment, and everything will come crashing down on us.

Not just lying on the table - but loaded.
Excuse my ignorance - but do handguns have safety mechanisms?

Was raised in a household where guns were everywhere, however, all ammo was behind locked doors.

Actually, what sound a bit fishy to me is that a three yr old was able to pull that trigger while holding the gun in a very awkward position for it to hit her in the stomach. The gun must have had a hair trigger for that to have happened the way it is stated in the article.
