"Mission Accomplished" PR stunt

There was no such thing. The sailors and airmen of the Abraham Lincoln did that on their own to commemorate the mission they indeed accomplished over an incredible 290 day deployment. In fact, all the troops who participated in the invasion of Iraq and run up to Baghdad accomplished their mission brilliantly, despite a lot of armchair generals claiming they wouldn't.

IMHO the snarky put-downs directed toward Bush and that banner dishonor the accomplishment of all who participated in that operation.

The subsequent occupation and nation building operation suffered from missteps and unexpected problems to overcome but in no way diminished the achievement of the invading force. Ironically, it now appears the second Iraqi mission is being successfully accomplished in light of the recent elections and withdrawal of most U.S. troops from combat. Iraq seems to have dropped out of the President and media's vocabulary now that it can't be portrayed as a failure.

Yes, it was MSM commie propaganda....some trolls here like to repeat it often.

The ship was heading home and turned around on 9/11, they set a record of service at sea that year, and the military (Tommy Franks) GWB, wanted to welcome them home and celebrate the end and return of the airman from Iraq.

Just read what GWB actually said that day in his speech.

My favorite “bait” threads on FR!

Very, very, helpful knowing who is who here.

Rrrrrright and Mother Goose is real too/sarc...incidentally, there are no "airmen" on Navy aircraft carriers; Navy carriers are all manned by Sailors (unless, of course, there happened to be a stray tailhook-equipped USAF plane on a swap courtesy tour).

That is HILAROUS coming from you, meandog. You're the biggest McCain pimp on FR, and McCain was the lead GOP voice for both CFR and shamnesty. But there is no sense in appealing to your sense of shame, because you long ago demonstrated you have none.

McCain might have co-authored it but he didn't sign CFR into law! But, have it your way, considering his concern for the less-advantaged aliens who illegally entered this country (and all else I listed) Doublepeeyew did a heckuva job and you have a right to be proud of him!

Do you miss George W. Bush?

About as much as I missed Ford during the Carter years.

I'd rather look to the future than pine for 'compassionate conservatism' and what it wrought in his 2nd term (excluding 1 credit for SCJ Roberts, a negative 1/2 credit Myers, giving him only 1/2 credit for SC Alito).

I still remember his 3 die-hard last-ditch attempts to get amnesty pushed through in 2006 and 2007. And the massive bailouts begun in the latter days of his watch.

No, I don't miss him.

Like I said, you have no sense of shame.

considering his concern for the less-advantaged aliens who illegally entered this country

And now you're a two-faced weasel, considering you were attacking Bush for this, but once confronted with the reality that your hero was even MORE for shamnesty, you try to turn it into a plus.

You stink as bad as McCain does, and for the exact same reason - you have no shame and no principles to speak of.

The political adulterer and two timing pimp, lord McCain has NO conservative credibility.... else his campaign in AZ and nation wide would be about making the Bush tax cuts permanent.... But NO history shows the fit thrower voted against them under some claim about ‘earmarks’.

At least Clinton we knew the president was too busy trying to live the frat boy life to actually do any damage to the country. Never thought I’d miss the 90s.

You can take your sarc and go tell the crewmen of the Abe they failed in their mission, if that's what you think. I sure don't and never have.

The Navy said the sign was their idea. I have no reason to think they lied about that.

The invasion of Iraq was an incredible operation that ought to be studied, especially in light of the fact a major part had to be improvised when Turkey denied landing rights to the 4th I.D., which was to have been the northern prong of a pincers. The ground forces accomplished their mission despite that.

The troops should have been honored for what they did but instead got years defeatist garbage from the libs and msm.

I’m supposed to have shame for admiring someone who spent 3 and a half years in a North Vietnamese POW hell hole while your idol was out getting arrested for DUI...

You really are a jackass, dog. Bush served honorably in the National Guard.

My point about your lack of shame stands - you attempted to attack Bush for two policies that your hero supported as well - and aggressively promoted - and then had the gall to turn around and try to treat one of them as a positive.

Just like your hero McCain would do.

Seems others disagree....

Frankly I just recall it the way I posted that it happened.

I'd be interested in seeing your sources.

Thanks-

The Navy says what the White House tells them to say...believe me, I'm retired from "the Navy" and distinctly recall the goal of NVA/VC body count quotas the DaNang brass (Navy/Marine) was supposed given to report back to LBJ's White House during the McNamara years for the media to digest!
