Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) on Tuesday defended his decision to change his mind on abortion when he was governor.
Romney campaigned as a pro-abortion rights candidate and maintained that position throughout much of his governorship. But the 2008 GOP presidential candidate said that he had a change of heart because of a bill that was considered that would have allowed human embryo research.
Republican and Democratic opponents of Romney used his switch on the campaign trail to paint him as a flip-flopper who has no core principles.
But Romney, who is presumed to be a 2012 presidential hopeful, said on "Imus in the Morning" broadcast by Fox Business Network:
If you change your mind on abortion, which I did when I was governor, youre going to have a lot of people not happy with you. That was certainly the case. Once you get a narrative its hard to shake it. Just recognize that its part of the game of politics.
The ex-governor later said that President Barack Obama also changed his mind when he decided to send more troops to Afghanistan:
He changed his mind and thats a good thing. As you recall, he was the most anti-war, get out no matter what guy in Iraq among all the Democratic nominees. And he won, I think in part, because of that posture. Becoming president he agreed with John McCain and President Bush and has kept our troops there. Actually having voted against the surge in Iraq, he is applying it to the surge in Afghanistan. I give him credit where he recognizes he was wrong.
Many on the left attacked Obama's decisions to send more troops to fight al-Qaeda and the Taliban and Afghanistan and many on the right hit the administration for setting a timetable for withdrawal.
Obama criticized the Iraq War on the campaign trail but said the U.S. should focus its strategy on Afghanistan.
Should Romney enter the 2012 race and Obama run for reelection, look for this argument to reemerge.
FU Romney!
I am trying to follow Willard’s “logic”. It sounds like, “Obama flip-flopped, so that makes it OK for me to flip-flop?”
My Dad always said “A fool never changes his mind, a wise man does often.” Of course he would say this right after he changed his mind.....................
It’s okay to lie if that’s what it takes to fool the idiots you need to get elected!
Mittens just seems to have a lot of backing from the rank and file uninformed GOP primary electorate.
If it were the only position he changed and if he had actually performed afterwards as if he had changed his position, I would have much less or no problem with him. However, the problem comes in trying to match his actions to his stated positions “of that moment.”
There could be no bigger disaster and no more solid guarantee of an 0bama re-elect than running this putz in 2012.
He was pro-abort when running for governor of Mass., because he figured that was the winning position. Then he switched over to supposedly pro-life to run for the presidency, because he knew that pro-abort was a loser on the national scene.
But he still included taxpayer subsidized abortions in RomneyCare, right toward the end of his term as governor. Because that was Massachusetts.
Now he’s trying to tell us that he had a “change of heart” over fetal research? He didn’t mind killing babies but didn’t like the thought of experimenting on them?
Strange heart that guy has.
It’s like being a FDR Democrat and then deciding to become a Republican. People change.
Romney using Obama as an example!!
What a dope.
Doesn't Romney understand that Obama says what he thinks will help him...has nothing to do with "changing his mind".
Well...on second thought, maybe Romney knows that exactly.
Piss on Romney!
I wouldn’t support or vote for Romney the political whore if he were the last Republican on earth! Piss on Romney!! He’s a statist. He’s still bragging about his anti-Liberty BIG government RomneyCare program which is the blue print and prime impetus for ObamaCare. What a frickin idiot!
Keep talking, Mitt. No one should take your shovel away while you’re digging the hole we’ll dump you in.
And now he’s telling Tea Party candidates not to run as independents in upcoming elections. I seriously cannot stand this guy.
In other words, Romney is saying, “it is OK not to be a hard head”?
Just returning the favor for every time Obama uses Romneycare as an example.
We can merge the two and say only a fool believes a man who changes his mind in pursuit of a new elective office.
It isn't at all like that.
Drifting away from the WWII Democrat party to supporting and endorsing GOP candidates in the 1952 election forward and becoming a conservative Republican leader during the radical 1960s is an entire world of history, away from dropping your Republican registration in the 1980s because you despise president Reagan so much.
Being liberal during the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, doesn't compare to someone having been a Democrat voter in the days of FDR and Truman.
Well I listen to guys like David Horowitz who were and changed. I'm sure there are others.
I'm confused as to why Obama decided to do an about face and decide to defend the country he hates but I'll take it.
