SACRAMENTO -- Sen. Roy Ashburn, whose personal life became the subject of rumors in the wake of a DUI arrest last week, said today he is gay, but he defended his numerous votes against gay rights bills.
"I am gay... those are the words that have been so difficult for me for so long. But I am gay," the Bakersfield Republican told conservative radio talk show host Inga Barks in an on-air interview.
A Sacramento TV station last week reported that unnamed sources saw Ashburn at a gay bar the night before his arrest last Wednesday on suspicion of DUI. The speculation set off a media frenzy, rekindling rumors that Ashburn lived a closeted life.
Gay-rights advocates seized on the news to point out Ashburn's votes against gay rights legislation and his appearance several years ago at a rally in support of a proposed constitutional amendment to prohibit gay marriage.
Ashburn defended his positions, telling Barks he was representing his district, a mostly conservative area running from Bakersfield to Visalia.
Theres never been a doubt in my mind on the position of the
vast majority of people in my district ... on these different issues, he said. And I voted as I felt I should on behalf of the people who elected me.

A drunk fag politician. How nice.
I’m sure his wife and kids are proud.
Is there a reason that he can’t be queer while holding his political convictions?
A lot different than uh the 'position' you take Roy.
Well that just chaps my ass.

GAG:(
He’s a married man with kids.
(A) he’s “bi”, not homosexual (unless he wants to push for paternity testing to prove the kids aren’t his).
(B) voting against same sex marriage doesn’t mean that it was a condemnation of homosexuality (that would come possibly in rhetoric from some of his public appearances), he certainly wasn’t honoring his own marriage vows of monogamy.
If I ever did anything like that, my wife would probably shoot me (with one of my guns) and my kids would help her reload.
I wouldn’t even give a crap if he wasn’t married with four kids.
Theres never been a doubt in my mind on the position of the vast majority of people in my district ... on these different issues, he said. And I voted as I felt I should on behalf of the people who elected me.
Good for him.
Not in my mind
another one ? has the whole dadgum world turned vaginophobic ?

Pray for the wife & daughters.
Good. You’ve got a good family.
Stupidity, and political suicide.
The poor gays don't even have a catchy "Uncle Tom" buzz phrase for this situation.
I wouldn't complain if he moved to the mitten and took on Senator Stabenow. Her marriage is a sham.
Like gun grabbing polis who ccw?
Good thing I didn’t have to read any further than the second sentence to find out he was a Republican. ;0)
