From Google Maps, it looks like you can drive from Skagway to Whitehorse, whereas to go to Juneau, you’d have to wait for the ferry. Makes it a no-brainer for emergency care.

You were saying ...

Sounds like Sarah is developing Biden-itis: The gift for gaffs, aka being a loose canon.

I don't see it that way. I don't see a problem with what she said. And I do hope you saw Post #199 ...

At five years old, she was a child and had no control of where she went for medical care. I smell something fishy about this article.

How did Sarah’s parents get health care on the Canadian system without citizenship? I am sure some form of I.D. was required and that would have ended it.

I would say that the people in Skagway have more of a connection with Whitehorse than they do to Juneau... :-) ... really ...

And Palin knew that, having lived there. And she was talking to those in Canada who knew that, too.

When something like that is said, its important to know that it was published to destroy the candidate that can do them the most damage.

You’re playing useful idiot to the opposition.

Skagway is rather unusual for Alaska Panhandle towns to have access to Canada via highway.

It's that your statement (that I was responding to) was not sufficient to refute the idea presented.

On the other hand, providing Palin's statement, plus stating the circumstances of travel to Juneau, versus travelling to Whitehorse, and how Skagway and Whitehorse are more connected than Skagway and Juneau (because of "transporation" and because of business connections with Whitehorse) -- goes a lot further and it "clarifies" things.

Your statement was merely something that anyone would expect if you are a supporter of Sarah Palin ... typical "knee-jerk" reaction, but no answers.

For these things, we need answers.

That's what people need to know... it was about business and "gold" -- doncha know... :-)

Skagway and Whitehorse have a lot more of a "connection" than Skagway and Juneau.

>> Palin: “We used to hustle over the border for health care we received in Canada,”

So Canadians were paying health costs for those of other nations?

Not at all... getting the accurate quote, getting the accompanying information, the transportation problems, the "connection" that Skagway has with Whitehorse, it all makes sense and it makes "perfect sense" to those in Canada (where she was speaking) as they know the connection there.

That's what people need to know when considering this kind of stuff. Get all the information out to the public.

No! They must have paid for whatever they received.

Skagway had a very, very sordid history during the Klondike gold rush, with grifter Soapy Smith and his gang.

My favorite story stems from the Mounties sitting astride the border, requiring one year of supplies to enter Canada (saved a lot of lives in the long run). One of Soapy’s men stormed into the Mounty cabin and asked if he could just shoot his way into Canada in defiance of the regulation. The Mounty opened a desk drawer, pulled out a handgun and put it on the desktop. “Here’s a gun. Start shooting and find out.”

The bunco man retreated back to Skagway.

Yes or no, I’m not sure what the issue is regarding Palin’s statement.

We’re also discussing something alleged to have happened about 40 years ago.

Good story... :-)

I haven’t been up there, but when I get up to Alaska, that’s the place I want to go to... Skagway and then to Whitehorse...

My wife’s great uncles went north to the Yukon. She has a Gold nugget watch chain that belonged to one of them. They returned to Humboldt County and found more gold cutting the Redwoods...
