Getting through to unions
NY Post ^ | March 07, 2010 | Editorial

It’s amazing what a mass of pink slips can do to make a teachers union see the light — especially when the layoffs are publicly hailed by the president of the United States.

On Monday, President Obama endorsed the decision by Rhode Island’s smallest, poorest city to fire the entire unionized faculty of its notoriously underperforming high school.

Just 48 hours later, the union caved — and publicly pledged to support reforms that it had earlier rejected.

In a speech, Obama proposed $900 million in federal cash awards to school districts that get tough with underachieving schools and unproductive teachers.

I doubt it. More likely they’ll be forced to accept reforms more to the liking of the emperor.

“Zer0 throwing the teachers unions under the bus to make political points? “

Maybe, but still the RIGHT thing to say, and gutsy for someone from his background. Now if he would only say a few things about getting calculators out of math classes...

Remember, according to the commie ‘RAT unions, American History didn’t begin until 1877. Someone needs to be taken out and shot.

Obama trying to pretend that socialism works.

Do not believe that Obama has the slightest sincerity.

Obama and the democrats destroyed the D.C. School Vouchers Program. This had allowed a few hundred refugees from the amazingly bad/corrupt D.C. schools to attend the very same private schools where 100% of all democrats in Congress and teh Administration send their kids.

Unions were illegal for public employees including teachers in RI in the past. Then the democrat controlled legislature worked out a deal with them. The teachers could unionize but it would be illegal for them to strike.
Okay?
Except every three years when the teacher contracts expired, the teachers would strike.
The legislators would all feign shock and express their indignation and shake their fingers and say, “You can’t do that.”
And the strike would continue.
After a while, if the strike went on long enough, the Attorney General (RI doesn’t have district attorneys-too small. The AG handles the whole state) would bring the teachers union into court. There the democrat appointed judge would shake his finger and tell the recalcitrant teachers that what they were doing was illegal, don’cha know. And tell them if they didn’t go back to work, well, there would be fines of, say, $1,000 a day and even contempt sentences for the union leaders.
All involved would say, oh gee, judge, please don’t do that. My family has to eat, etc. etc. And leave the courtroom with smirks on their faces.
And the strike would go on.
So, eventually, the judge would order fines and even contempt sentnces - suspended of course on condition of continuing negotiations.
And the strike would go on.
Sooner or later, the strike would be settled.
And the teachers union, now joined by the AG and municipal authorities would all troop into court with smirks on their faces and say, “Hey, judge, we’re all friends again so let’s let bygones be bygones.
And the judge would vacate the sentences and remit the fines. And send everyone home with the admonition to not do it again.
But they did.
Every three years.
Like clockwork. You could count on it.
(I lived in RI for many years before moving to FL 16 years ago. Maybe things have changed but I doubt it.)

I hadn’t heard about that! heh, heh, heh...can’t wait to see if the teachers (0bama lovers) I work with know about this one! Doesn’t seem like a thing the state controlled media would be jumping on.

In Michigan it was republicans who facillitated and drove the forced unionization of home care workers. They did it in return for union support and cash.

I don't trust it either. This line...

In a speech, Obama proposed $900 million in federal cash awards...

Sounds like a deal was cut to the union to back down, and then some cash will appear at normal drop location.

I agree. And you can start here in New Jersey! Fecking teachers unions in this state are a criminal organization who ought to be tried under the RICO Act.

... endorsed the decision by Rhode Island’s smallest, poorest city ...

Yeah, that was brave. Stand up to the smallest city in the smallest state and then lavish them with cash after it is over.

According to the No Child Left Behind legislation everyone bashes Bush about if the school failed three years in a row they went on a probation list. If they failed two more years, for a total of five, federal funds were to be cut off.

...to fire the entire unionized faculty of its notoriously underperforming high school.

It seems they found a way to not only keep their funds but to get even more. Just a political sleight of hand. What else would we expect from this bunch?
