You can rewrite your master boot record if you are using XP and have the actual XP disk. Simply boot to the installation disk, choose R when it asks you to, in the next screen type 1 and then when the prompt comes up again type in FixMBR. This will rewrite the master boot record. I have used it many times to get rid of stuff in the boot record.
Thanks for the advice. I’m always learning something.
Right you are - one of the hallmarks of a phishing scam is poor grammar or sentence construction. I get a lot of those at work here, and almost all of them look like they were constructed by a 12 year-old.
Another red flag is the link(s) they provide. If you hold your mouse over the link, the address will pop up, and you’ll see that it most likely doesn’t go to that company at all.
Bottom line - NEVER give out your personal information unless you know with 100% certainty who you are dealing with.
Did you try another browser like Google Chrome yet?
My PC has been attacked by viruses a few times. What is so terrific about FR is if you have a problem, you can post it and there are people willing to help you figure it out and fix it. I’ve benefitted by reading threads dealing with PC issues on FR and am always grateful for the advice.
I’m reading your post and learned something new today. Putting the cursor over the link and read the address. Now that’s another tip I’ll remember and it will probably save me someday.
Thank You!!!
Anytime - FR is a wonderful resource and learning tool!
On Saturday, I spent all afternoon with eBay and PayPal, changing my passwords [which were 11 years old - dating from 1999 - and had never before been changed].
No. Does IE do that automatically or did you have to find out how?
Do you know how to get FF to respect "CTRL-N" so that it opens a new window at the page currently being visited, rather than opening a new window which reverts to the home page?
I can't imaging a reason to do that. That's what Tabs are for.
Are you aware that you have to download an obscure [untested] add-on from Japan just to turn OFF those God-awful tabs in FF? I could go on and on and on - the ergonomics that FF presents to the end user are simply atrocious.
Never thought of turning off tabs. Why would you? That's what makes FF so much easier to navigate.
You can select "Open Tabs in new Window" from the option menu. Or, if you right click, there is a "open tab in new window" option always available.
I wish you well - you’ve done everything you can. It must be hard. Keep us posted.
My security software gave me a warning on zillow tonight - that’s a first...
FYI, as I just said to ShadowAce [above], it looks like this computer was infected with something called the “HelpAssistant” MBR virus.
I'm having problems with a new user file called "HelpAssistant" and uninvited Remote Desktop activationsThe consensus seems to be that you need to figure out a way to boot from a different medium, and restore your MBR with the recovery console command "FIXMBR".
