I'm just dismayed to see Sarah being tied in so closely now to show biz, pop culture and tabloid sensationalism....and she's brought it on herself.

In today's world, this is how you break-through the media's lock on your image.

Besides, Reagan was part of pop culture, coming out of Hollywood. He knew how to use that for his advantage.

Reagan had decades of speeches under his belt, but the media tried to portray him as a fool from select movies he did. So Reagan took the message directly to the people.....that is what Palin is doing -- eliminating the filter.

For a President who often came across as cold and wooden, I thought it was actually pretty OK.

At the time, if you remember, it helped his personal ratings immensely.

It is denying the cycle of decadence that is destroying us from within by subverting our cultural heritage.

What cultural heritage would that be? Puritan? Gold Rush era capitalism (which for the record is where I'd like to go back to in a perfect world.) Pre-WW2 isolationism? Post WW2 nuclear family? Drug sex and hippes of the 60s? Sex, drugs and rock'n'roll of the 70s? Drugs and decadence of the 80s? You pick a time, I guarantee you that drugs were a problem. Homosexuality was a problem. Teenage pregnancy wasn't that much of an issue; that's a Modern Moral Highground for folks to stand on. 14 year olds not too long ago were marrying age. Trust me, I see the forest. Trees don't blind me. So go ahead and let me know that I can't pick and choose where I can and can't look back in time and see how modern issues existed back when.

...All in all, there may have been some laughter added over the top of her jokes, but only to enhance the audience’s reaction not fill it in completely. I am sure this is not the first time this has happened on a talk show.

This is the only part of Mallard's insightful post on HotAir.com that I need to respectfully disagree with.

Here is a private reply that I sent to some Palin supporters who asked for MY opinion of this latest scandal:

...I don't plan to spend much time refuting the Kos Kids Konspiracies -- but OUR GROUP was probably the "laugh track" they thought they heard.

We only had a dozen or so FReepers (and FRiends) actually get in, so perhaps our support for Governor Palin did sound a little "forced" at times.

But it also may have helped that we were sitting directly under a microphone that may have made us sound louder to the TV audience at home than it would have to the bozo (sitting in another part of the studio audience) who wrote this screed.

I certainly did not hear HIS supposedly "loud" groans and sighes from where I was sitting -- in the center. Perhaps they really did have the mikes where he was sitting turned down. It sounds like where the "Rouge" people were sitting was where our friend Eric Golub was sitting. Maybe HE saw their "coloring books" -- and heard their "groans." WE certainly did not, from where we were sitting.

And OUR "Palin palm prints" didn't make it on the TV crowd shots either. The cameras were ignoring ALL of us in the audience, equally, I think.

On his side, over by the Tonight Show band, there were a lot of rather vocal Shaun White fans. Maybe that's why his mike was turned down, and did not pick up his sounds as well our mike did for our sounds -- at least for what the the audience at home was hearing. - RonDog

If you can’t see that our nation is in moral decline, what are you fighting to defend, our right to listen to thrash?

You are picking and choosing quite a strange array of time periods to point to, but the label you chose for each time period don’t point to a moral base. The closest you came was “Puritan,” and the fact that you chose that label indicates that you really don’t know much about the Puritans other than what your teachers have programmed you to think. The Puritans were actually a pretty fun bunch who didn’t mind drinking, lewdness, and having a wild time. They were “pure” in their interpretation of Biblical teaching.

It sounds like you believe the lie that Revisionist Historians have been preaching that American tradition is evil. I’d suggest “Patriot’s History of the US” and “the Politically Incorrect Guide to American History” if you’d like to read some history books that actually paint us as having a pretty good track record.

By the way, I’d go for the gold-rush era of capitalism in a heartbeat. Economically, we were far better-off under “Laisse Faire” (though there was not much that was actually hands-off about it) economics, and it was a far better banking system.

But I’d also go back to a time period to when pop culture was not so blatantly decadent. I know the Great Generation was not perfect, but I’d much rather go to a Glenn Miller concert than a Pearl Jam concert. Yes, the people had their faults and weaknesses, but we made a joint effort to shame wrongful behavior and praise virtuous behavior. When we allowed the Leftists to destroy the concept of right and wrong and of shame and praise, we allowed them to dictate the new right and wrong.
