Woefully Misplaced Pride at texas A&M; Coach brags about newspaper theft
The FIRE ^ | March 05, 2010 | William Creeley

Work at FIRE long enough, and sooner or later you're bound to think you've seen it all when it comes to censorship on campus. After nearly four years here, I certainly thought I could no longer be shocked by the suppression of student speech. But a story from East Texas this week has floored me.

Here's what happened: On February 25, Texas A&M-Commerce's student newspaper The East Texan featured a front-page story reporting that two members of the school's football team had been arrested on drug charges. But many of The East Texan's readers never got to read that story in the print edition, because between 7 AM and 8 AM that morning, copies of the February 25th edition of the paper were stolen off the racks across campus. The widespread theft suggested a coordinated effort, and the negative story about the team seemed to suggest a motive. Sure enough, The East Texan reported later that day on its website that evidence implicating the football team had surfaced:

The best team building experience they ever had, the coach said of the organized theft.

Bone said he met with Athletic Director Carlton Cooper about the thefts.
Cooper said he did not think the players involved could have planned the theft.

“I don't think they are smart enough to do this on their own,” Cooper said.

Too stupid to be in college, LOL.

This is not the big-boy Texas A&M. Should make that clear in the title.

Kind of like how Keef Olberwoman didn't go to the big-boy Cornell.

I have a relative who works in a university, and they things that the athletic department gets away with are quite infuriating. Not surprising these douches think that they are above the rules.

Yes this is why I hate the recent re-naming / re-branding efforts recently around the 2nd tier universities in Texas - it creates mondo confusion.

What we're really talking about here is East Texas State University.

And we never should have opened the PUF for 2nd tier schools - sorry that's MHO.

The coach apparently organized the theft.

He was very proud of it.

Hey its a long title, I figured something had to go.

Can we fit -Commerce after Texas A&M?

Glad to hear that. My daughter is an aggie. I always thought they had some of the highest standards in the Nation.

The preferred shorthand is TAMU-C.

Should have been dubbed East Texas A&M when it joined with the stepmothership. That would have lead to less confusion.
