Hope you are right. McCarthy wants us to keep our eye on the ball here, and not underestimate the opposition. I agree with what you are saying, but the pressure has to stay on.
Our R’s have had a nasty habit of backing off.

You're quite right about the R's. But the D's won't let Obama close Gitmo any more than they're going to give him an Obamacare signing ceremony. You do need to keep the pressure on an enemy in retreat. At some point he may surprise you by turning to fight (eg. the Battle of the Bulge). But Andy McCarthy is imagining an enemy with far more fight in him than BHO has nowadays. To exploit our advantage we must first perceive our advantage. So soon after the triple disappointments of McCain's nomination, Obama’s victory and the “filibuster proof” Senate it's hard to accept that the enemy has destroyed himself, but that's what has happened and we need to deal with it.
