ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) ― Grain alcohol would not be available for sale in Maryland, under a proposal from a western Maryland lawmaker.
State legislators will hold a hearing Friday on the bill, which would prohibit the sale of beverages with an alcohol content of 95 percent or more.
Sen. George Edwards said he introduced the legislation at the request of Frostburg State University leaders. He said he backs the bill for safety reasons, because "when you get to 190 proof, you're almost pure alcohol and it don't take much of that to do somebody in."
State legislative staffers say at least 11 states ban the sale of such beverages.
The Senate approved a similar bill last year, but it did not pass the House.

Oh no! Now what do I fill a watermelon with?
Damn busy bodies ....
interesting coming from a lawmaker whose district lies in the heart of Whiskey Rebellion territory
although western Maryland is only 2 to 5 miles wide in many places, so unless PA, WV and VA follow suit this looks pretty futile

Oh fer cryin out loud....
Thats why we set the drinking age at 21.
If anyone is so stupid as to binge drink to death, maybe we should let them.
Besides limoncello isn’t as good with vodka...gotta use the Everclear....
In other news, revenuer jobs are being created.
Frostburg State University.... that’s all you have to know about this story.
LOL
I have to laugh at the use of the term "beverage". Where's the dividing line between "beverage" and "reagent" or "solvent?"
Our legislature is rumbling about this, due to an incident with some special needs higher education types drinking Everclear.
What I didn’t know, Everclear has already been emasculated down to a wimpy 150 proof, from the admittedly (cough cough) smooooth 190 or whatever it was. Can one still by the “real” Everclear anymore?
Worse, what do we mix with our pure rainwater...??
Gen. Ripper is saddened.
Ah well....there goes my secret ingredient for my gin on the rocks!
LSD.
Well, I guess there will be no more Hunch Punch parties in Baltimore. Dang. And I loved eating the fermented fruit! It was like a big feel good desert!
