It should be mentioned that Poujade truly was an Archie Bunker type, particularly in his opinions on Jews. Sarah is not. Nevertheless, the message and the movement is very similar to that of Poujade, and I do find that many of (not all) Palin's supporter are indeed anti-intellectual, and Palin's glorification of the wisdom of the commons reminds me of the Poujadists.
The comparison is more in terms of presentation (and in the level of media attention that Palin and Poujade both received relative to their actual level of support) than of substance. I still believe that Palin will fizzle, despite all the media hype. We shall see...
>and I do find that many of (not all) Palin’s supporter are indeed anti-intellectual,
Maybe they feel that intellectuals look down on them with contempt.
>and Palin’s glorification of the wisdom of the commons reminds me of the Poujadists.
Or maybe she just feels that the ordinary Joe or Jane can be just as good as a Ivy League educated type. Ivy Leaguers aren’t infallable. They can be as wrong as everyone else.
>I still believe that Palin will fizzle, despite all the media hype.
Still, if that is the case, then surely the media could afford to ignore her.
Different strokes for different folks.
He was a good man personally, but he was very misguided in thinking that he could "Get Along" with the opposition. I prefer a person with a sharper edge who really doesn't care if the other side gets mad at them.
More importantly, I prefer someone who wants to reduce the size and scope of government, not fund "No child left behind" and "Drugs for Seniors" programs that have no Constitutional basis.
He is head and shoulders above what we have now, but that's not a very difficult standard.
Then you must not have been paying attention during the 2000 and 2004 elections, for Bush clearly campaigned on these two issues.
Oh, I paid attention. What was I going to do....vote for Gore or Kerry? I would have preferred Forbes or even Keyes.
In 2008, on paper, Duncan Hunter was the best candidate (not my candidate, but the best conservative) and look how badly he did.
Right now I am leaning Palin, but to tell the truth, I just am not sure she could win. If Ryan got into the race, I would back him in a second!
I think he’s too happy doing what he’s doing and he proved to us in 2008 that he did not want it. A lot of good people sent him money they could ill afford while he was deciding whether he wanted it or not. Never again although I think he’d be fantastic.
But it was your compromise, not W’s. You could have always written in the name of Forbes or Keyes. Hopefully, this time, in the primaries, there will be a conservative to vote for. (I’m in Ohio and by time the primary comes around, most candidates have dropped out. That’s why we need national primary day. I’m tired of Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina deciding the issue for us)
And as for "lazy and tired." That was pure media hype.
We can agree on that part.
I'd take it a little further and restrict our primaries to registered Republicans only. I'm getting real tired of Independents and crossover Democrats choosing our candidate for us.
I would do that, too. I would go as far to say, one man, one vote, one day.
