AFP - The far-right Party for Freedom (PVV) of anti-Islam MP Geert Wilders came first in municipal elections in Almere, east of Amsterdam, and second in The Hague, according to partial results released early Thursday.
Wilders's party, set up in 2006 to "stop the Islamisation of the Netherlands," contested only those two cities in its first municipal election Wednesday, three months ahead of early general elections June 9.
In Almere the PVV with 21.6 percent of the vote was ahead of the labour PvdA, winner in the previous elections in 2006, which got 17.6 percent, according to the results from 96 of the 98 polling stations.
"What is possible in The Hague and Almere is possible all over the country. It's a springboard for our victory," Wilders told supporters in Almere.
In The Hague, the country's political capital, the PVV came in second behind the PvdA.
Most polls had predicted the PVV would come first in Almere, a city of 187,000 inhabitants east of the capital Amsterdam, and second or third in The Hague -- the Netherlands' third largest city with 442,000 residents.
The PVV holds nine seats in the 150-seat lower house of parliament.
The Dutch went to the polls Wednesday for local elections viewed as a test of political loyalties and far-right leanings 10 days after the collapse of the centre-left national government.

“Far right”? I doubt it.
Sure be wild of Geert Wilders got the last laugh and became Holland’s prime minister.
The Moose would sure be in Dutch then.
Stopping evil = Far Right.
He’s not anti-Islam. He simply tells the truth about it. There wasn’t a single lie or misrepresentation in his movie, Fitna. Every single verse of the Koran in that movie was printed word for word from it.
No pictures or film were doctored in anyway.
The same cannot be said about Al Gore and Michael Moore’s productions and they are awarded oscars and nobel prizes. Ironic.
Well so much for Holland’s so called “tolerant” reputation.
And a good thing too. Most of the Dutch population has been trained to be so PC for two generations that they don’t realize that their throats are being cut; they are just debating how sharp the knife should be.
One can ony hope so!
It would be sweet, sweet revenge.
Far right in Europe=moderate Democrat in the US.
How many political parties are there in the Netherlands (including The Party for Animals...)? Any one party taking upwards 20% marks a giant hold, and a huge movement. The Dutch political system is managed top-down, and the elites on its top are wildly afraid of Wilders and the PVV.
How's that working out for you Dutch MSM? You just got your butts handed to you on a platter. The Dutch apparently don't agree that freedom is a far-right concept or if they do, they'll accept the smear and say, "OK, I guess I'm far right. I want to protect my freedom, including freedom of speech. I want to protect my country from invasion by immigration by Muslims, who want to change my country, instead of becoming part of it. If that's "far-right", I guess I'm far-right."
The social meme of mind-control in breaking down in Europe, thanks in part to the internet.
Socially libertarian; economically euro-skpetic which is sort of conservative in a way.
There are 11 represented in the lower chamber.
Heehhhe can’t wait till 9th of June for the elections!
The irony of course is that they used to pride themselves on their tolerant attitude [ like Canada ] but now they have to live with being considered “a right wing country” along the likes of various conservatives / anti-immigrant-swamping countries they demonized in the past.
