US will supply sophisticated laser-guided-bomb kits, 12 American-made surveillance drones and 18 late-model F-16 fighters to boost Pakistani forces capability to strike in remote tribal areas, a development which could spark unease in New Delhi.
The new arms supply, Wall Street Journal said was part of efforts by Pentagon to boost Pakistani forces capability to take on Taliban and Al Qaeda militants.
Islamabad is also to receive equipment capable of converting 1,000 traditional munitions into "smart bombs" that can strike targets with precisions, the paper reported.
With this new arms aid, US counterinsurgency assistance fund for Pakistan is slated to increase to USD 1.2 billion in fiscal year 2011 from USD 700 million in the current fiscal.
"Pakistan, which is smaller and poorer than neighbouring India, uses American grants to fund most of its arms purchase," the Journal said.
"The laser-guided-bomb kits could spark some unease in India, where officials have been warily watching the expanded US military aid to Pakistan and wondering if the weapons would one day be turned against them," the Journal wrote.
"India lobbied against recent US legislation giving Pakistan billions of dollars in new non-military aid, though the measure was passed anyway."

Keeping this stuff from being turned against India is tricky
I agree. I have no idea why we are dealing with Pakistan when their government is ready to fall.
Maybe because the CIC is a crypto-muzzie.
I agree. I have no idea why we are dealing with Pakistan when their government is ready to fall.
Because the State Department is infested with enemies of America. America’s interests are not their first priority. It’s a progression toward One World Government.
Pakistan & India both have nukes. They’re both in the US sphere of influence and you can consider India an emerging strategic ally, especially as a neighbor of the Chinese. That said, both sides still persue their own interests. India is aligned against Pakistan which is a good balance in our eyes. India also is still a major customer for Russian arms. The US needs Pakistan from a cooperation/obligation stand point in the WOT. I would think despite what’s said publicly, both sides understand this.
India?
When we had Bush, we were on the same side.
Now that we have a muslim co mingler in chief, he is out to help his brethren.
I find it very difficult to see why Pakistan needs F-16 fighters against a bunch of stone-age terrorists. Against India, yes.
Hell, if we can’t afford to buy fighters for our own air force, how on earth can we justify this?
The list, ping
Pakistan? I want the US to be friends with India, not Pakistan. What a disgusting slime traitor is stiking up the White House.
Stinking. I must proof read.
Obama's blindness to the Islamic threat of Pakistan has driven India away from their US alliances into the arms of the country that is likely to be our biggest competitor for the next 50+ years.
China is also financing our way of life - this just gives them even more leverage over us. When they pull the string, the unraveling will be something to behold.
Damn, but that Obama kid is sure smart!
...run by China, and maybe, Russia as a partner.
