Everyone hates each other — it’s Hollywood (nurse grudges better than high school girls?)

Everyone hates each other — it’s Hollywood

Kathryn Bigelow, director of The Hurt Locker, during filming. A producer has been banned from the Oscars

Chris Ayres, Los Angeles

It is a night of glittering statues, pristine red carpets and gracious speeches. But behind the air-kisses, smiles and displays of magnanimity at the annual Oscars ceremony, dirty, though often expensive, battles go on, with competitors more than willing to knife each other if it means taking home a trophy. After all, winning means more business at the box office and higher fees in the future. Not to mention the bragging rights and publicity.

This year, perhaps because of the recession, which has made the financial stakes of an Oscar win so much higher, the tactics appear to have sunk to depths even lower than those in the past. Hence the controversial announcement by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences this week that it was banning a producer of The Hurt Locker — the Best Picture favourite — from attending Sunday night’s ceremony.

It is the first such order in the organisation’s 83-year history and an extraordinary rebuke for “negative campaigning”, given that the worst punishments previously handed down have involved nothing harsher than a studio’s ticket allocation being reduced.

The ban was provoked by the producer, Nicolas Chartier, allegedly sending out a mass e-mail to friends and colleagues, many of them academy members, encouraging them to vote for his low-budget Iraq war thriller and “not the $500 million film” — a non-too-subtle reference to James Cameron’s Avatar.

Hollywood freaks are ever-so ruthless competitors? I thought they hate competition. We are told that they are all for sharing and mutual love.

I know. I am just pointing out the glaring difference between their public pretense of compassion and caring(they are uber-liberals) and the reality of vicious fights.

Still don’t know who you’re talking about. Nicolas Chartier? Katheryn Bigelow?

Nicolas Chartier created the furor and Katheryn Bigelow is afraid of the fallout.

Yes. You just used some pretty harsh name calling and I was wondering what these people in particular did to warrant it. They made a good film about the U.S. military in Iraq.

They just don’t want YOU to be competitive. Lay down for your rulers and all.

They are not the only ones mentioned in the article, and I was commenting on the general trend in Hollywood, which pretty much matches behavior of liberals in other area. Most of them are indeed freaks and world-class hypocrites.

The % that speak out publically about matters political is actually pretty small.

Not publicly speaking out does not mean that they are not liberals, just that nobody would give them publicity.

There are millions of liberals who do not have a chance to air out their agenda, but are as liberal as or worse than those saying it publicly. Most of them pretty much follow vocal minority. Yes, there are(or used to be) conservatives in Hollywood. They are endangered species, and nobody in Hollywood strongly come out to defend(individually or as a group) them when they are under vicious attack.

Entertainers all over the world tend to be liberals or avowed leftists. It is not an anomaly confined to Hollywood. This may change in the future, but for now that is how it is.

Numerous times I've seen interviews on tv where "A" list actors talk about how difficult the filming was... how draining it is to act.

My take: it is all a bunch of bull crap. The "actors" and their handlers are all working to set up smoke screens to protect their (their client's) interests.

These people should all win awards depending on how well they fool the buying public.

Democrats are always pissing and moaning about "excess" profits that oil companies make... no one ever talks about the "excess" profits that the "A" list actors pull in... how much does it really cost to manufacture an actor? That's right no where close to what it costs to research oil deposits.

That's my rambling soap box rant... please drive through.
