I grew up during the post war period when ‘japanese’ meant ‘junk.’

I drive a Toyota. Chinese tools went from so-so anvils to pretty sophisticated machinery and electronics, which would not have happened without western engineering and capitalization. We haven’t left the caveat emptor phase, as far as I’m concerned, but the US has given its manufacturing to the chinese (... and Mexicans and ...)

I’m old enough to remember when Japanese was junk. Then it went to Taiwan, Korea, Brazil, Mexico, India, China, etc. It’s all relative, but all countries make some decent goods if you are willing to pay the price.
