Senate Republicans have cited West Virginia's Democratic Senator Robert Byrd as someone who has spoken forcefully against using the reconciliation tactic as a means to pass health care legislation through the Senate.
It should be noted that Senator Byrd went after the Republicans in 2005 and compared their strategy to Nazi tactics (see video and transcript below) when Republicans considered using their majority power to halt an unprecedented filibuster mounted by the Democrats against President Bushs judicial nominees. Democrats called it the nuclear option while Republicans argued that the Constitution only required members to advise and consent on the presidents nominations, with no provision for a super-majority, so Republicans called it instead the constitutional option.

And he was talking about Clinton ...
In this case he’s correct.
I would be surprised if Byrd actually knew his own name at this point. They will wheel him in, vote him, and then send him back to his nursing home. A dottering lickspittle fool.
He’ll be reelected after he’s dead.
...but when all is said and done, he’ll still vote for the damn bill.
That is exactly what they did right around the Christmas time vote. They rolled him in, all the Dem’s stood up and gave him a standing ovation. He voted, and left. I don’t care if you are an R. or a D. This is now way to represent your constituents. At this point he is just blindly voting the way the democrats tell him to vote.
That comparison is why I'm not surprised that Obama and Pelosi are going down that path.
