I would like to think that after the November elections and the retaking of Congress this event and others will be a solid basis for impeachment on a number of grounds (abuse of power, giving aid and comfort to the enemy, etc.).
High crimes and misdemeanors.

Not impeachment but you will hear the Democrats start sounding the “politics of personal destruction” gong after the election. They know that they spent two years with a free reign and Democrats took advantage of it. They will start running for cover soon. Clintoon supposedly fired all the prosecutors to cover up the firing of one particular prosecutor. The one looking into Whitewater. He replaced that prosecutor with a crony. Pretty much the same scenario going on here. Using the power of the presidency to cover up malfeasance. And the result will be the same. Nada.
The lid will remain on fairly tight as all we have is libs in Congress to investigate.
However, after November, watch the fireworks.....
The bar is now so low on fitness for public office, that I think this kind of thing is here to stay.

Mary Jo White. He was surprised (but shouldn't have been) at the amount of heat generated when Reno asked for White's resignation. But firing all the sitting US Attorneys upon taking office has been the rule going back quite a few presidencies; at least Reagan, GHWB.
I agree with your ultimate conclusion that Walpin won't get any justice - justice is long dead in this country. The US is the world's premier banana republic.
