AF Nuke Units Fail Inspection in Montana
Associated Press/Military.com ^ | 3/02/2010 | Associated Press/Military.com

Two Air Force units responsible for the nuclear missiles warehoused in Montana failed inspections last month, military officials said Monday.

There is no threat to the public and the units at Malmstrom Air Force Base near Great Falls are still performing their missions while correcting the problems, according to Global Strike Command and Air Force Materiel Command, which oversee the units.

The 341st Missile Wing and 16th Munitions Squadron received "unsatisfactory" ratings in February from Air Force inspector general teams evaluating the units' ability to carry out their missions. Neither Global Strike Command, which oversees the 341st Missile Wing, nor Air Force Materiel Command, which oversees the 16th Munitions Squadron, would detail the problems found in the nuclear surety inspections, citing security reasons.

"There were no critical deficiencies noted. The wing is still fully able, in the eyes of the inspector general team, to conduct its mission safely, securely and with credibility," said Lt. Col. John Thomas, spokesman for Global Strike Command based in Barksdale, La., which oversees the nation's nuclear equipped bombers and intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Air Force Materiel Command released a statement that said the 16th Munitions Squadron is correcting the deficiencies and will keep its nuclear certification. Spokeswoman JoAnne Rumple declined further comment Monday.

Haven't heard of John, but then again if I saw the fellow his face might ring a bell.

The original rock... that's about it. When I was out there my first commander was Col. Ingram. I would've followed that man into hell.

Our next commander, who's name I won't mention, I had little regard for. He was by the books fellow. Didn't inspire much confidence.

Does that bring back memories.

You must have been out there during the solar eclipse? I was out at Delta. It was an amazing thing to see. I actually had to tell the guys inside to come out of the compound, as they were watching it on television.

Semper Fi!

LOL. Been a long time since I heard that one. Ya, it truly is a dieing breed, those that have been SACcumcised. While it was a little annoying to be SO regulated, it sure took the guesswork out of most everything. If this happened, you did that! If that happened, you did this! Have to say, always knew where you stood. Any questions? Get out your copy of 207-16.
lmao

Here’s a funny story you’ll like.

When I worked out at KILO-1, I had a young (jeep) LT downstairs one day. Now, this being a Squadron Command Post, supposedly only the best and brightest manned the site. Well, and along with that, as the SCP, we also had those buried POP-UP antennas, to be used in case of a Nuke war.

Well, it was a really nice day, I was pulling FSC, and the SYN line rang. It was the LT from downstairs. He said, “So, hows it going? I said fine. He said, notice anything strange topside? I looked around and said, no. He said, look up toward the antenna field. Notice anything weird? I looked and said, no, why? He giggled and said WHEW! Well, I’m kinda new down here and was pushing all these buttons and thought I might have exploded the top off and raised the antenna. LMAO! I got the best laugh at him and all he could do was take it. The next day when he came up, we really got a good giggle out of it (without his commanders knowledge(probably wouldn’t have gone over too good LOL). For the rest of my time there, he and I worked together really great. Nice kid.

That's hilarious.

Did you ever get the new guys to sweep the gamma rays off the parking lot? When we'd get newbies in we'd get them to sweep the parking lot. Told em it kept the gamma rays off the parking lot so the capsule crews wouldn't have to deal with interference from down below.

We had more than a few fall for it.

Oh yeah, did that alot. Seems the kids started getting smarter though. Less and less fell for it. lmao.

I WAS there when someone sent a calf down the elevator to the capsule crew. If I remember correctly, they had ordered beef tips in gravy for dinner and well, they thought, the fresher, the better, right? Went over real good, with the exception of the smell. (cow poop smell seems to linger long after the animal itself is gone. lol

Boy... what I would have given to see those faces. Those boys down there were armed though... could’ve had their own BBQ.

Great.

I'd love to go back... perhaps someday I will.

When I was there they still had active EB-57 Canberras. They were active until 1979, as far as I know. I left at that time.

We also flew out to the sights often in Hueys, as the pilots needed air time.

A lot of us SAC types predicted these problems when they dumped SAC and turned the operations over to ACC. There was a reason why SAC pounded its operators and maintainers with Nuclear Surety and continuous training.

That old movie still is exactly what I felt like doing a few times to a couple of crew partners I took evaluations with.

The homosexuals who will be promoting each other up the ranks will have it all sorted out.

I'm usually not so pessimistic, but I think you are probably right your prediction here. It will be exactly like those Catholic seminaries that turned away straight students or the university departments that promote based on political correctness.

Yup, Got there in 78 myself. They were still flying, I think, until about 1980. Coulda been 79, hard to really say. I do remember they had some problems with the landing gear on those. I witnessed them them foaming the runway on a couple occasions. lol

At Vandenberg AFB they had huey’s and they used to fly low to the point that you had the water spray on the helicopter.
