JEFFERSON CITY, MO. -- Missouri lawmakers are a step closer to taking away Mark McGwire's Highway.

The stretch of Interstate 70 in St. Louis was named for the Cardinals' slugger in 1999, in one year McGwire hit 70 home runs.

But McGwire has now admitted he used steroids, and the state senate voted unanimously yesterday to rename the section of interstate the Mark Twain Highway.

The measure now goes to the house.

Mark McGwire's stats are bogus and tainted with steroids and Mark Twain is a Missouri icon. I support the action of the Mizzou House.

Headline has it wrong--it was the state senate which has voted.

Is it wise to rename the road before testing Mark Twain's bones for his steroid use? They know where he is buried (Elmira, NY).

Mark Twain was heard to quip, “the news of my irrelevance appears to have been highly exaggerated!”

Isn't it proper to ping a Freeper when he is mentioned in a thread?

This is the VERY FIRST Mark Twain highway? What were they waiting for?

” . . . Mark Twain’s bones for his steroid use? They know where he is buried (Elmira, NY).”

But supposing the reports of his death were greatly exaggerated?

True...hadn't thought of that.

I've seen his grave marker in a cemetery in Elmira, but for all I know it could be a cenotaph.

"Just rename it ‘Roid Rage Road."

Isn't there already one of those, named for George Brett?

I have a 1996 Rand McNally Road Atlas which has a stretch of I-70 northwest of St. Louis labeled "Mark Twain"--it isn't clear from the map (insert map of St. Louis and vicinity) how long the part named for Mark Twain is.

There is a Mark Twain National Forest in Missouri (at least 9 separate tracts).

The should rename it "Honest Politician Highway" just for maximum hypocrisy value.
