BlueCross cutting reimbursements to health care providers in Tennessee

Hit by a $96 million loss from managing TennCare enrollees last year, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee will cut reimbursements to thousands of specialty physicians and to some hospitals by 14 percent and is counting on an emergency room diversion program.

The losses were more than twice what BlueCross expected and could reach $135 million this year, according to a records review by the Chattanooga Times Free Press.

It is the latest in a line of cutbacks looming for providers — a 7 percent rate reduction to all TennCare providers that takes effect in July, and an unresolved issue in Congress that could drop doctors' Medicaid reimbursements by 21 percent.

This option would help reduce the costs of TFL, as well as costs for Medicare, by introducing minimum out-of pocket requirements for beneficiaries. Under this option, TFL would not cover any of the first $525 of an enrollee’s cost-sharing liabilities for calendar year 2011 and would limit coverage to 50 percent of the next $4,725 in Medicare cost sharing that the beneficiary incurred. (Because all further cost sharing would be covered by TFL, enrollees could not pay more than $2,888 in cost sharing in that year.) http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/99xx/doc9925/12-18-HealthOptions.pdf

Congress plans to block Tricare fee increases http://www.armytimes.com/news/2009/10/military_tricarefees_blocked_100709w

Tricare fee increases imposed last week by the Defense Department will be repealed by a provision of the compromise 2010 defense authorization bill unveiled Wednesday by House and Senate negotiators. Snip The fee increases were announced on Sept. 30 and took effect on Oct. 1, but the defense bill, HR 2647, includes a provision barring any fee increases until the start of fiscal 2011.

Retired Army Maj. Gen. Bill Matz, president of the National Association for Uniformed Services, said the announcement of fee increases was shocking considering that the Obama administration promised earlier this year to hold off on any new fee Tricare fee increases until fiscal 2011.

“President Obama and DoD assured NAUS and the entire military family earlier this year that there would rightly be no increases in any Tricare fees” in fiscal 2010, Matz said. “We took them at their word, and I can’t believe that a co-pay increase like this was allowed to go forward,” he added.

Why pay for insurance if they won’t pay off. WTH is insurance for?

And to make it more ‘sickening’ we’ll be charged huge cost for not getting insurance.... that doesn’t pay off.

When I lived in Memphis, mid-1990s, there were tons of illegals in the area.

look folks...the federal govt....the taxpayers...can not afford to pay for these "promises"...

we were promised a great pension with medical...so we didn't get it....its tough..

but that's the way it is...

the truth is that NO ONE should just assume they get free health benefits I don't care who you are...

everyone MUST pay something, and if we all start paying something, the overuse of doctors and Emergency rooms and the constant prescribing of meds for every little sniffle and ache will stop, because people will be invested in what is paid out...

I don't care if people are retired military, govt, private industry, teachers, police, firemen, congresscritters, SS or even Medicaid...

what happens when all these groups get free or cheap or extremely inexpensive medical benefits?.....its all dumped on the taxpayers....

so why do I pay about $700 a month for my husbands medical insurance alone?....because we are paying to cover all the Medicare, Medicaid, govt, etc insurances programs who don't pay the full cost...

my husband is due to go on Tricare in a couple of years, so I'm not sour grapes...just a realist.

NO ONE saying they should get free health benefits.

I expect my car insurance to pay off if I have a claim.
Health insurance is the same.

That’s what insurance is for.

Good Luck on that Tri-Care thing.

I take my good private insurance co and Medicare (of which I paid taxes on
when I worked) and still pay on now. It’s certainly was never free.
