President Obama Digs In to a Southern-Style Lunch, Says He Doesn't Want 'Lectures' About Cholesterol
abc ^ | 3/2/10 | ABC News’ Karen Travers and Sunlen Miller report:

Posted on 03/02/2010 2:38:44 PM PST by Nachum

Just days after his doctors expressed concerns about his rising cholesterol levels, President Obama dropped by a family-style restaurant for an authentic – but perhaps not so healthy – Southern style lunch in Savannah, Georgia.

In between events, Obama paid a visit to Mrs. Wilkes' Dining Room and made it clear he did not want to hear it from the press about his choice of lunch.

“I don’t want any lectures about my cholesterol,” Obama said. “Don’t tell Michelle.”

Yep, thats what I meant. Don’t tell us what to eat, smoke or drink and we won’t tell him what to eat smoke or drink.

Happy to hear you had a great time there. I spent most of a decade living within an easy walk of ‘The Plough.’ I would stop by for live music and a pint or two late at night. Too bad missed out on the dinners though they may not have had them back then. If you visit the area again try bbq at Redbones in Somerville.

The professor should stop lecturing us about what is wrong with this country.

“I don’t want any lectures about my cholesterol,” Obama said. “Don’t tell Michelle.”

That's the first thing he has said that made any sense.

fried chicken, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, baked beans, and potato salad.

Yea, right, oh that will kill you in a year or two... NOT.

Just another stunt like saying "the campaign is over" or other nonsense. Bammie is trying to look like a "commoner" and not like one of "the educated class."

Bet you his approval numbers are sinking even lower...

That's the way my paternal grandmother cooked. Grew up on a plantation in Barbour County and in town in Eufaula, AL.

My maternal grandmother was another matter. She was a white-gloves-and-pearls sort of person, from Augusta GA but she learned to cook from her German housekeeper while she and her husband were living in Pittsburgh (he worked for Westinghouse Electric his entire working life). So that side of the family is much more Pennsylvania Dutch in its cooking, even though it's all Augusta, Charleston & Upstate SC in blood.

All this southern food talk is making me mighty hungry. I’m starting my prep for a colonoscopy tomorrow morning. Yuck! YUCK! Y*U*C*K!!! Does anyone have any suggestions for making the prep process a bit more pleasant?

I would bet that Bambi have never eaten soul food until now.

Soul food would be wasted on a man with no soul.

Definitely saute' the onions and garlic. Got to get the raw taste out of them. You can do them til they're just translucent, or make them proper brown as in Indian or Italian cooking.

My daddy’s a better cook than I am, too (my mama can’t cook a lick - she burns water). But that hasn’t stopped me from cooking. It gets better. Remember he had a number of years’ head start on you.

Food wise it’s much like BB’s Lawn Side, or Rosedale bbq but you can get beef ribs there as well.

The people in the Plough probably wonder what that strange Stroud’s place is that Rush talks about. (er, actually, most people in the Plough probably think Rush is a band from Toronto.)

We were there visiting my son and he was playing banjo and pedal steel guitar at the Plough. Good Irish pub.

That menu doesn't sound like soul food - more like general Southern regional cooking. Although I would expect to see potato salad at a church social rather than a sit down boarding house spread.

And where are the vegetables? Green beans with ham hock, collard or turnip greens, black eyed peas (alone or as Hoppin' John), slaw, yellow squash casserole, copper pennies (glazed carrots), creamed spinach?

And rice with gravy - white or brown. And homemade biscuits or raised rolls?

And no cornbread? Whatta matter widdese folks? It's got to be bad reporting or insufficient observation -- the reporter must be a Yankee who's always eaten out of the frozen food section or cans.

Let's see, “Barack Obama is not going to let you go back to your life as usual.”, but he can't be lectured too?

It’s certainly one of my favorites for that area. It was renovated a few years ago (shut down for many months around 2005) and is a great venue for performers.
