WASHINGTON — Senator Jim Bunning, who chose not to run for re-election, appears willing to take the heat for holding up unemployment benefits and shutting down highway construction projects around the country. Other Senate Republicans, who are hoping for big political gains this year, are not so eager.
With Mr. Bunning’s objection to extending jobless aid quickly becoming a national cause célèbre, his colleagues were trying to find a quick resolution to an impasse that was not only having direct consequences on some of their constituents, but also doing some political damage to the Republican brand as well.
Senator Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader and Mr. Bunning’s home-state colleague in Kentucky, said Tuesday that the Senate leadership was trying to reach an agreement that would result in Mr. Bunning’s dropping his insistence that the $10 billion cost of the jobless benefits be covered by money from the economic stimulus bill.
And Senator Susan Collins of Maine, a moderate Republican colleague of the conservative Mr. Bunning, joined Democrats in trying to force the measure through, calculating that perhaps a plea from a fellow Republican would get him to change his position. She was wrong.

All Sen. Bunting is requesting is that they abide by the Pay-Go law that Nancy Pelosi was so proudly announcing the Dims just passed. Just fund the extension.

“Pay-Go” is just a nice sound-bite for Democrats making the Sunday talk-shows.
Bunning’s insistence is the right thing to do.
‘Rats don’t like it because it depletes their taxpayer funded payback / bribery monies, i.e. Porkulus.
Rhinos don’t like it because they’ll let the ‘rats dominate the political discourse on the subject and they’re afraid of being “mean spirited”.

If you only read this you would have no idea why Bunnings was doing it. Maybe you’d think he had a stroke.
You’d think a decent reporter might mention that.
This is why the Democrats are not worried about the mid term elections. They know that the Republican Party will save them.
if we are gonna hand the left a propaganda weapon to bludgeon us over the heads with(and drive away independents), I’d rather it be after we are certain Obamacare is 150% dead in this session of Congress.
Great idea but the timing is just really, really bad.
Obama is doing nothing to create jobs, but a whole lot to destroy millions of them. Vote against ANYTHING Obama wants!

I disagree. Timing is never bad for defending our nation against deficit spending.
I just called a local office of Sen Cornyn. The staffer said he does support Bunning. I read her the quote from the NYT. She said she’d check it out.
