And after he had finished debating w/Leiberman, my wife and turned to each other, mightily impressed, and said, “So how come THESE two guys don’t get to run the country?”

It's not only a matter of personality but also one of being mad as hell and not going to take it anymore. If the roles were reversed (and Cheney was the ex-president and Bush the ex-vice president) I still believe that Cheney would be letting Hussein have it as there appears to be a bulldoggish attitude about turning the cheek just so often with Cheney. Bush, of course, would roll up into a Dan Quayle mantra and say nothing.
