Perry's message frustrates Hutchison [TxGov]

HOUSTON — U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison rode a quarter horse with a heavy winter coat down the middle of Texas Avenue on Saturday morning, diligently waving to the thousands of Houston-area families that lined each side of the street.

Her appearance in the annual parade preceding the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo was like a number of Hutchison's campaign appearances on the final weekend before she tries to unseat Gov. Rick Perry in Tuesday's Republican primary: She met — or at least waved to —Texans where they were, whether they were eating, shopping or watching the horses parade by.

A day earlier, Gov. Rick Perry flew around the West and North Texas cities of Midland, Lubbock and Amarillo after starting the day with a business relocation announcement in Wichita Falls. Perry's crowds were much smaller than the thousands who came out for the rodeo parade, but they were, by and large, Perry's crowds — Republican voters who had come to see and hear the governor.

Perry has ridden an anti-Washington sentiment to a lead in the polls that has lasted for several months, although it's unclear whether he will win the majority vote he needs to defeat Hutchison and Wharton activist Debra Medina and capture his party's nomination without a runoff. Leading candidates Perry and Hutchison campaigned earnestly over the past couple of days, a fitting near-end to perhaps the highest-profile Republican primary in Texas history.............

Whereas Hutchison spent much of Saturday mingling with members of dispersed crowds in public places, Perry was the main attraction at each of his events Friday. Anyone could attend, but those who did were, like Parnell, staunch Perry supporters who heard him forcefully deliver a simple message.

"There's a land of opportunity in America today," he said more than once. "It's called Texas." Although many Republican primary voters object to Hutchison's more moderate stance on abortion and embryonic stem cell research, Perry talked almost exclusively about economic issues, bragging that the state had built up billions of dollars in a reserve fund during an economic slowdown. Left unsaid was lawmakers' use of more than $10 billion in federal stimulus money to get through the downturn or that the budget shortfall Hutchison referenced will fully hit the state next year.

Why is D.C. an issue in governor's race?

WAYNE SLATER and CHRISTY HOPPE
The Dallas Morning News

AUSTIN – Rep. Brandon Creighton had an idea, but he needed help.

The sophomore legislator, believing that Congress had overstepped its bounds, wanted the Texas Legislature to declare the supremacy of states' rights. His cause needed a push, and he turned to Gov. Rick Perry, who gave it a big one.

"I believe that our federal government has become oppressive in its size, its intrusion into the lives of our citizens and its interference with the affairs of our state," Perry said at an April news conference that spawned national media coverage and accolades from conservative icons.

Just days later, Perry went even further, saying he understood how frustrated Texans were with the federal government and how they might want to secede from the union. His rival, Kay Bailey Hutchison, saw that as a decisive moment: "Rick Perry just lost the race today," she told a staffer when she heard the comment.

Their reactions to the anti-Washington feeling that exploded in the Republican Party define the yearlong battle that culminates Tuesday in the primary for governor. Perry caught the sentiment just as it was rising. Hutchison was slow to see it coming.

Once the most popular politician in Texas, she's now struggling just to make a runoff against Perry.

"There are few elections where it's good to be from Washington. This is one where it's near fatal," said Eric Bearse, a political consultant and former Perry communications director. "The best political operatives in the world would try to make you think that they road-mapped the movement, but the events just came together in such a way that his message caught fire."

Hutchison, while still expressing confidence she can win, acknowledged the obstacles. "I'm fighting a headwind," she said recently.

It wasn't always this way. Exclusive interviews with key participants and observers show how the candidates reacted to the changing political climate and how the Republican contest ended up where it is today.

Precinct politics may reach a boil for Republicans

Feb. 27, 2010
Bud Kennedy
Fort Worth Star Telegram

Democrats learned about the "Texas two-step" in 2008.

This year, more Republicans than ever are expected to return Tuesday night for the second half of party primaries: precinct conventions.

Ron Paul libertarians already dominate some Tarrant County Republican precincts and elected a state committeewoman last year. Mix in the various flavors of Tea Parties -- from sensationalist to secessionist -- plus some Glenn Beck activists, and you have the makings of a Republican rumble.

"We have a lot of new groups in the party," said Cheryl Plunkett, president of the Hurst-based Metroplex Republican Women.

"They're very passionate. They want to make a difference. They're here because they're upset about the president and Congress. We want to see where we can all work together as Republicans."

Two years ago, the Paul revolution started at the precinct level. Dozens of activists organized by e-mail and showed up to take over precincts, passing their own resolutions reflecting Paul's campaign platform.

By the state convention, Paul's backers challenged party leadership.

They supported their own candidate for state party chairman. Paul D. Perry of Ellis County didn't win, but he did get about one-fourth of the delegates' votes.

"Everything starts at the precinct convention," Perry said by phone Friday.

"The new groups know that if they want to change the Republican Party, it starts Tuesday. Anybody can go to YouTube[.com] and learn how to run the convention. You're going to see a lot of activity from new Tea Party and liberty groups."

end snips........

Only one candidate gets it...

45. One of her biggest concerns is stopping illegal immigration. She wants to post the Texas National Guard along the Texas-Mexico border.

Too bad the others don't get it! If it doesn't happen soon Texas will become another California.

ATTENTION TEXANS! Think before you vote!

Are we so desperate to clean house of 'career politicians' that we jump on the bandwagon of Debra MEDINA, an unknown ex-nurse with zero experience, questionable judgement and loyalties and who worked on the RON PAUL presidential campaign???

Perry leans too far to the left at times for the taste of most of us, but consider this: Texas is in better shape than almost any other state in the union since it's been under Perry's governorship since 2000!

If we're going to kick him out, we'd better be D*MN sure we know just what we're replacing him with!

Just WHO would we replace him with?

Ron paul/truther nutter Medina?

Trecherous Washington RINO Hutchison?*

MUSLIM FAROUK SHAMI?

Or maybe Lib Bill White?

Nominate Medina and we'll surely turn over Texas to White and the 'rats. She CANNOT beat White.

Perhaps in the future a more Conservative candidate will emerge for Texas, but this time around WE HAVE NO CHOICE.

For God's sake, has anybody really looked into her platform- her background? Has this woman even been vetted?

She wants legalized drugs.

She backs gay marriage.

.

She has not spoken to her elderly parents for YEARS. They had to find out she was runing for governor of Texas by reading the newspaper!

http://www.statesman.com/news/texas-politics/medina-hailing-from-beeville-learned-political-skills-on-229907.html?srcTrk=RTR_95609

What does this say about this woman's character?

And rumors are begin to surface about husband Noe's past associations.

Take a look at some of the statements she has made:

"I don't have all of the evidence there, Glenn. I think some very good questions have been raised. In that regard there's some very good arguments and I think the American people have not seen all the evidence there." (When Glen Beck asked her about the 9/11 conspiracy theory)

"It’s a shame isn’t it, that Republicans continue to ignore Hispanics especially here in Texas?’

For God's sake, MEDINA, what else do you want? (Or shouldn't I ask?)

"Who is going to think more about Latino families? Rick Perry, Kay Bailey Hutchison or me, who has a Latino family?”

"Being married, however, to someone with a Mexican American heritage, I certainly embrace the culture.”

"I believe we too often get into race when it’s immaterial.” (Obummer, is that you?)

I don't believe for one minute Medina's propaganda about wanting to strengthen the border!

La Raza probably has her in their back pocket!

This idea that Beck (or anybody else) sabotaged Medina is absurd. If you can’t answer “did the govt have anything to do with the 9/11 attacks?” you're not be fit to run for dogcatcher.

Glenn Beck has once again helped the tea-party stay in the Republican mainstreamby by weeding out dangerous fringe thinkers like Medina.

Medina is NOT representative of the Tea Party movement. She USED them- latched herself on to them. She’s a hard core Libertarian who has realized that the Libertarian Party will never win anything and that the only possible way to get herself into office is to do what Ron Paul did and wrap herself in the Republican cloak in hopes that it will fool enough of the voters enough of the time. Thank God Glen Beck outed her in time.

Retrieve your sombrero from the ring and go home Senora Medina. You're Texas toast. . .

* REMEMBER THIS, TEXANS:

Feds Have Built Only 32 Miles of 700 Mile Double-Border Fence Originally Mandated by Congress

“One reason DHS has been able to do this is an amendment that Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R.-Texas) slipped into an omnibus appropriations bill that Congress passed on December 18, 2007. Hutchison’s amendment put a loophole in the fence law that allowed the secretary of Homeland Security not to build the fence Congress had mandated the year before.”

In the Primary the best vote is Medina. It will scare the bejesus out of the RNC even though she loses.

I won’t slap CA but Texas will be or is on its way to major changes many of which aren’t for the best, imo. I think even the Guard on the border isn’t near enough. I believe to truly put a strong impediment upon the incoming illegals from the south border it will take a barrier from one end of Texas to the other. I know that’s very costly but the nation will or is bearing the burden today without one. Also the coast will have to be monitored along the Gulf and CA shoreline, imo.

A vote for her may well be the only way to keep Perry from winning outright in the primary. But then you’d have ‘King Perry’ versus ‘Queen Bailout’. Not a good option in either one, imo.

What I want to know is what the hell difference is it to an election to be bow-legged? Whoever wrote these bios was favorable to Medina. I’m voting for “bow-legged, no-pits sweating” Rick Perry.
