Islam Besieges Turkey's Secular Governement As Nation Knocks At Door Of European Union

A Muslim siege is re-born in Turkey. Since the founding of modern Turkey in 1923 by secular military officer Kemal Ataturk, there has been an ongoing battle between the military services and the forces of political Islam over how the nation shall be governed – by Sharia (Muslim law) or by secular democratic methods. The recent arrests of fifty senior Turkish military officers, charging twenty of them with a 2003 plot to overthrow the government, demonstrate that Islam and Sharia are alive and well in that nation. The implications for the freedom of Europe and The West are significant, as they were at the Battle of Vienna in 1683 (pictured above).

Five admirals, three generals, the former commanders of Turkey’s navy and air force, and the former deputy chief of staff of the military are accused. By arresting the heart and soul of its military officer corps the Turkish government, under Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan , may have made an overt move away from secular rule toward making Turkey into another Sharia-ruled Muslim state that is now demanding admission through the gates of the European Union. A Los Angeles Times Editorial presents the thumbnail sketch, albeit with scant and naive understanding of the sinister nature of Islam and jihad...

Why would the Turks be eager to join the EU now? They would just be stuck with all the debts and bickering.

If they wait another ten years, they can probably walk in and own the place.

Money.Lots of money. The same reason that formerly poor countries like Ireland and Spain wanted to join.Today,Ireland is one of the richest countries on earth and it's partially (largely, actually) thanks to the billions that the EU pumped into the country.

Turkey,I'll wager,expects the same.

It was always just a matter of time before the islamists got the upper hand over the military. Looks like Turkey is going down the drain. As for the EU, Islamists wanted to force there way in and open the floodgates to a tide of moslem colonizers legally overwhelming europe.

I would geuss that plan is dead, but then again no longer necessary.

Something I don’t get: Clearly these are trumped up charges. (No serious plot papers itself over with 5,000 pages, doesn’t execute, and then keeps the paper around. Doesn’t happen.) The islamists have therefore declared war on the military. So why hasn’t the military struck back? Are they that weak? Infiltrated? Scared? Or just waiting, and if so, for what?!

The recent arrests of fifty senior Turkish military officers, charging twenty of them with a 2003 plot to overthrow the government

The issues of the election (2002 - 2003) that brought the new AKP to power were mostly a poor economy and corruption.

The voters knew that the AKP had ties to Islamists and obtained promises from the AKP that the party would eschew Islamism and respect Turkey's constitutional democratic Republic. In fact Erdogan was not even permitted to serve owing to his Islamist past. Parliament did clear the way shortly after the election.

It's hard to give the charges against the officers creditability that soon after the election.

The AKP did not move that soon. In fact, I recall that the AKP leadership was willing to give the U.S. permission to enter Iraq from Turkey but the effort lost to established parties in the parliament owing mostly to public opposition and pressure from the EU mostly France.

I recall that the Army made it clear from the start that the AKP was being watched for signs of Islamism.

Why would members on their own try such a thing?

Meanwhile the AKP leaders established warm relations with many EU leaders and the EU leaders pressed for an end to the Army's "interference" with politics

-- seems clear to me now that it was a quid pro quo.

Though the AKP retained control in the 2007 elections it was not before hundreds of thousands of Turks took to the street protesting Islamism. They didn't even want Gul as president.

Something definitely is happening in Turkey. We of course are kinda occupied by a similar threat

.. as I say

If modern America's Man on Horseback is out there, Get on the damn horse already!

It’s common knowlege that the US intelligence services support this Islamisation in Turkey, but why? I just read a piece in Turkish that made a lot of sense. The military in Turkey had been becoming increasingly irritated with the USA over her suport for the PKK terrorist organization (thriving in the no fly zone, setting up shop right acros the Turkish embassy in DC, etc). The US distaste for the Turkish armed forecs fist became real obvious when they stormed a forward base in Iraq and arrested our boys putting bags over their heads. This all seems to be a way for the US to bring about a Tukish armed forces that is very friendsly toward the US regardless of US stances on issues that concern the welfare of the Republic of Turkey.

The military can’t just act, it would cause an incident in relations with the US. The state dept and the CIA love the AKP, and hate te others. The other parties HATE the us foreign policies which have cost many lives in the southeast where the terrorist PKK thrived all the while enjoying safe harbor in the US and Europe. What if the US were to then command them to relinquish immediately? Read my post above for some insight.
