The saying "every day is a gift" is usually seen as a Polyanna-ish statement, but I think that misses the point. A gift is, by definition, something you have not earned, do not deserve and have no right to expect.
I didn't say every day is a gift. I said no one is guaranteed another breath and I don't think of another breath as a gift, as precious as it may be.
