Republican Rep. John Linder of Georgia won't seek re-election in November's midterm election, a National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman said.
Linder made the announcement Saturday during a speech at the Gwinnett County Republican headquarters in his home state, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
"It has been an honor to serve alongside John and his presence in the House will surely be missed," NRCC Chairman Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas, said in a statement.
Sessions added, "Above all, his service to the citizens of the Seventh Congressional District of Georgia was unmatched, and I am confident that voters in this ruby-red district will elect another capable Republican to continue supporting the conservative principles that John so passionately promoted."
A spokesman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee said Linder's decision to retire is another blow to House Republicans' aspirations in this midterm election year.

“John Linder was a champion supporter of the Fair Tax.”
Exactly. Hopefully, he’ll be replaced by a Republican that doesn’t favor that idiotic Progressive tax scheme. Flat taxes with no exemptions, rebates, or deductions are the only “Fair” taxes.
Also, John Linder said he wants to devote time on getting The Fair Tax passed.LOL! Right.
Sitting on his fat ass at the farm (not even in his own state let alone district) sucking a fat pension off the taxpayers is much more productive for the Fairtax. Cuz leading the Fairtax charge for 10+ years even with a republican majority in the house and senate AND a republican president was sure a waste of everyone's time.
The Fairtax = the global warming of tax scams...Suckers!
Its a very safe GOP seat. Linder was one of the first to call for flat tax/fair tax, but he never got anywhere with it, even when the GOP held the House.
John Linder has my full admiration and respect. When Newt deserted us right after being reelected, I looked toward Congressman Linder as a surrogate.
John has been a reliable representative.
I wish him well.
I will miss him.
