bestintxas: “As far as I am concerned, we need a serious reduction in the size of the federal govt, and a wholesale zer0-based budgeting process like the private sector must do.”

I’m with you on that. I agree the government needs to be substantially reduced. The posters who are out for blood against all federal employees, while saying we should support the military, are wrong. The military is actually composed of many civil servants as well as active duty. Also, there are other essential federal services that require employees, and I hope most folks understand we want competent people in those jobs. I’m all for the return of a republic. I’m not in favor of anarchy.

BTW, I understand the ire against the federal government, but the employees are not necessarily the problem. It’s up to taxpayers to step in and restrain the politicians. Eliminate programs, cut government. That’s great. But trying to slash everything across the board is plain stupid. That’s what the politicians will want to do if we can even manage to hold them to that. They’ll do a freeze or cut spending across the board, punishing the good with the bad. It’s not politically popular to eliminate unconstitutional programs to save constitutionally mandated ones.

I think we are close to being on the same page after all.

I have a diff when I see military though: when I speak of military I mean the Armed Forces. Anybody in the DOD not wearing a uniform is a civil servant who happens to be working in the DOD. I have the same opinion of the non-uniformed civil servants in the DOD as i do of all other bureaucracy. I wil not lump our Armed Forces along with them.

Also, I am for getting good people at competitive salaries into the federal system, with two caveats:
1. The system should not be out-of-whack on salaries so as to be far greater earnings potential than the ones you work for. Not right if it is.

2. there should be far fewer(say a factor of one-tenth at least or smaller) of Civil servants drawing compensation off our backs at the federal level.

I also agree the politicians are the biggest problem. We need conservatives at all levels.
