I think it came in initially as 9.1 and was downgraded to 8.9, but the region has long, long shallow shores and the Chilean coastline fortunately does not.

The 1960 Valdiva quake was about 400 miles south of here, the world’s biggest earthquake.
This looks to be a MEGATHRUST Earthquake, with a whole lot of deep plate mileage letting loose at once. Look for some Chilean Volcanoes to go off on the next few days, as well, just as in 1960.
It also triggered a pacific-wide tsunami that killed 61 people in Hilo Bay,Hawaii, with 35 ft. waves.
