Men bond in ways when women aren't around that are crucial to survival in warfare. It's not just in the military. At one point I was a young guy in a small startup, working long hours and hanging out with the other guys there. When we got a couple of female developers, it completely changed the group dynamics, and not for the better. They were thin-skinned and demanded that we change to suit them.
Guys behave differently when it's just us guys, and have closer relationships.

Amen. I've known of the same in work situations (not the military) where guys working together accomplished things and met deadlines (and budgets) that they'd been told were impossible; it won them an Emmy, in fact! Had women been in the mix, there's not a snowball's chance in hell those women, even the best of them, wouldn't have innocently or maliciously screwed up the dynamics. Smart women know when to leave men to themselves. Smart women know that if women ruled the world, we'd still be living in caves.
