It’s not my typhoon, it’s yours. The U.S. Navy doesn’t like to surface to recharge. A nuclear power plant limits stealth because you can never turn off the cooling. We could make quiet (when not charging) diesels but choose not to.

The German fuel cell sub, (hydrogen/oxygen) is supposed to be ‘totally’ silent as there are essentially no moving parts in the electric fuel cell generators.

Prolly because the US Navy chooses to fight “away games”. AIP’s and modern diesel-electrics are essentially coastal defense weapons. Great for breaking blockades or threatening a next-door neighbor.
