SOUTHERN ARIZONA So-called small government Maverick and Arizona Senator John McCain wants to give the federal government more power over the regulation of vitamins and supplements by repealing the classification of these products, currently, as food.
The Dietary Supplement and Safety Act would increase regulation over the availability of many vitamins and supplements available to consumers in the free market.
It is big government that has a proven track record of not protecting the public. And it is big government that is seeking to take away yet another individual freedom, the right to choose ones own treatment, said JBS.org, a group dedicated to protecting freedom and the free market.
An onerous burden would be placed on the shoulders of suppliers and retailers of dietary supplements, as they would have to obtain written evidence from the seller that the product is registered as required by law, and keep that documentation on file. Monetary penalties for non-compliance may, in addition to other penalties imposed in this section, be fined not more than twice the gross profits or other proceeds derived from the manufacture, packaging, holding, distribution, labeling, or license of such dietary supplement, they added.
The McCain bill would change existing mandatory serious adverse reporting regulations, requiring minor adverse effects to be reported as well so that the FDA could arbitrarily pull supplements off the shelves or reclassify them as drugs. This immediate recall authority would be granted to the Secretary upon determination, that there is a reasonable probability that the product is adulterated or misbranded.
Relying on the FDA to regulate and control more of our free market, fraught with all kinds of safety concerns themselves, is an outrageous infringement on the freedom of consumer choice
I wish the crazy old bastard would just finally go away. He should have rode off in the sunset after losing his pathetic attempt at running for president.
The good GOP voters of AZ could make it happen this year!
Yes ... and Sarah Palin is supporting him to remain as a Senator. How nice!
we pray that it does
He must be getting pressure from the pharmaceutical companies. People in AZ probably agree with him on this even if they use supplements. What the AZ people don’t know is that McPain’s plan will INCREASE the costs of such supplements. Why can’t AZ people ever learn? Maybe it’s the beautiful desert that distracts them.
Yeah, it is really going to be possible to spot test a product on the shelf. I don’t shop in GNC for the fact that they could care less what they sell.
Why is it okay for these supplement companies to rip off consumers? In my line of work I get sued for misrepresentation and fraud.
Or do you not care if the stuff you buy is crap?
McCain is an idiot and a control freak.
If you don’t know about a products quality or properties don’t buy it. It’s not rocket science. Caveat emptor!
Someone should sneak into his house and inventory all the illegal vitamins he has
Are you referring to the Hosmer bill around 30 years ago. I was in that fight and it was very big and bipartisan. I am now 71, strong, healthy, and have taken my supplements regularly all these years. Never got the family illnesses that made my mother so miserable for so many years. I was starting to, but after reading Adelle Davis, “Let’s Eat Right to Keep Fit”, and “Let’s Get Well”, and following recommendations, had a major improvement in my overall health which has persisted to this day.
These Leftists hate Freedom and love Regulations.
What is Sarah Palin’s position on freedom to take supplements?
its a disease
exactamundo !
There is labeling on most food that we buy. I really doubt that it is free of this same problem, and it would not surprise me if it is less accurate.
Apparently McKook is too detached from reality to understand that, like Medicare, this topic is a third rail of American politics.
This bill will go nowhere fast, and he will regret sponsoring it.
