McCain was elected to the US Senate for the 4th time in 2004 with 77% of the vote. This was long past CFR, and his opposition to some of the Bush taxcuts. McCain's views on immigration were no secret either.

The new media ( Rush, Hannety, Ingrahm, Levin, Savage, FR, blogs, Foxnews )hit McCain with everything they had to keep him from the GOP nomination in 2008. Conservatives failed.
