WASHINGTON - The Pentagon seeks to lift a decades-old policy that prohibits women from serving aboard Navy submarines, part of a gradual reconsideration of womens roles in a military fighting two wars whose front lines can be anywhere.
At issue is the end of a policy that kept women from serving aboard the last type of ship off-limits to them. The thinking behind the previous policy was that the close quarters aboard subs would make coed service difficult to manage.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates notified Congress in a letter signed Friday that the Navy intends to repeal the ban on female sailors on submarines. Congress has 30 days to weigh in.

“how many reasons can we find here why this is a terrible idea ?”
That seems to be the qualifier for this administration’s policies!
Celebrate diversity! A few squalling chilluns on boomers are a small price to pay.
I am all for equal opportunity for women, but this is just plain stupid. And any woman who wants to be in a asub for months at a time, are showing just how stupid and ignorant of the pressures and difficulties that they will be under, even if the entire crew is a bunch of limp wristed pantie waists who have no sex drives. Ignorance and stupidity in service to willful egotistical FemiNazi retard pride.
We now know that Admirals care little about their sailors and more about PC with Obama.
And how long will we have to wait for a woman serving on a sub to sue the US Navy for millions in a harassment lawsuit?
If they thought Tailhook was bad.... I don't even want to know what this will lead to.
PMS can be a baaaad day for all.
"Break off patrol. Immediate surface. Cancel EMCON A. Prepare for urgent cross-deck. PO3 Jane Doe, 3-months pregnant, miscarriage risk."
Apparently they care about as much as the Generals did for the soldiers at Fort Hood. ;-)
AHHH, Hollywood, what can I say? BTW, the USS Balao was the sub used in the movie. http://www.submarinesailor.com/boats/ss285balao/
I’m all for it if Gates guarantees pre-natal care out of his own pocket, nothing out of the tax payers’ pocket. Also, all child rearing expenses until the child reaches the age of 18.
This is a great idea. Someone’s got to do the cooking, cleaning and laundry.
It looks like the Military Class is a copy of the Political Class. No class.
Think they’ll let me back in Subs? Women on subs was our dream during those 90-day patrols in the late 60’s early 70’s ;)
Terrible idea then, terrible idea now.
I wonder how long it will be until the first charges of Sexual Harrasment will be filed....My guess is 1/2 the sailors on board will be brought up because they looked at a women too long after a 6 month deployment....
“Up periscope!”
No abortion clinic on board? How thoughtless of the Navy.
