Oh my: Student poll analysis of midterms shows GOP might pick up … 60 seats

I confess to not having read this guy’s blog before, but (a) his sidebar resume is certainly respectable and (b) he’s taken seriously enough by Jonathan Chait to have earned a post today at TNR showcasing his glorious, glorious results.

The standard “anything can happen before November” caveat applies, but between this and Charlie Cook’s warning last week, we’re slowly moving from a “can the GOP take back the House?” reality to a “how many more seats than the Dems will the GOP end up with?” reality. Here’s where things stand on the Great Liberal Realignment of 2008:

The generic House ballot is tilting to Republicans in ways not seen… ever. Or as Michael Barone put it, the Republican margin currently seen is “historically unprecedented”. To those unfamiliar with the generic ballot, it is the question asked on national surveys that goes something like this “If the elections for Congress were being held today, which party’s candidate would you vote for in your Congressional district?” I have often (in my own head) questioned the usefulness of the generic ballot because House elections are held in districts not nationally, and surveys are only getting at most a few respondents from each district for each survey. But the fact of the matter is that vast majority of research indicates (see Charles Franklin, Matthew Shugart, and the Pew Research Center among others) that if you properly use the results from the question, you can get a pretty good idea of what is going to happen…

How will the generic ballot results from 2010 at this point translate into vote in the general election?

No. Keep the rats in the majority in both houses, about 3-5 seats each. Nothing gets done and Obama can’t run against a GOP House/Senate like Clinton in 1996 and Truman in 1946.

Then 2012 becomes a campaign to “clean sweep” all three chambers.

Looks like two house seats and the governorship are likely pickups here in Michigan.

Also good news for redistricting after the 2010 census if this can be extended to the state houses.

We need just enough to uphold a vote to de-fund any Obama mandates. Then 2012 we undo the damage.

Seems everyone forgets that spring of 2011 after the new Congress convenes there will be articles of impeachment and we will be rid of Zero.. No way we will have to put up with him for his whole term.

Impeachment would be a very bad idea, unless and until obvious criminal activity is proved and accepted by the public.

Granted. Perjury is a pretty criminal activity. But thanks to Democrat intransigence, media connivance and a confused public, conservatives actually lost ground by impeaching Der Schlickmeister.

Nope. We need subpoena power in at least one chamber.

I've heard what one of the House seats in play is (7th district), but what's the other?

The birth certificate thing will go nowhere and pursuing it will allow him to do more damage.

If you want to address it, just pass a law in your state forcing every candidate to require any candidate appearing on the presidential ballot to permit the release of any copy of a birth certificate on file.

That sounds great, but are there enough Republicans with a spine and the inclination to do the right thing even if they have subpoena powers? I say, unfortunately, no.

I don’t want the venomous snake Barry to have anything to run for or against in 2012. Even one chamber (and if the GOP does win one chamber I hope it’s the Senate - SCOTUS picks) can give the snake something to run against, besides GWB, that is.

The last time I read such “happy-happy, Joy joy” nonsense, Nancy Pelosi took the Speaker’s chair.

I’d LOVE to see it, but I doubt it even COULD happen, with the depth of corruption now ensconced in the electoral system

Articles of impeachment on what grounds? Being a terrible president - even a Socialist - is not a ‘high crime or misdemeanor’

Look, it’s politics and sometimes you can’t do all of the right things all of the time. You pick your battles. With subpoena power, we can go on offense when we need to.

But if you’re fantasizing that we’ll put the whole lot of them in jail, no we won’t.

No, not 1994. Bill Clinton was a politician. Barack Obama is the avenging angel of the third world and oppressed people’s everywhere.

It will be much worse. Or better, if you’re thinking long-term electoral prospects.
