Brave teacher:
Deer Creek Middle School math teacher David Benke tackled the shooter but couldn’t stop one more shot from being fired, according to his wife, Sandra Benke.
David Benke, who has taught at the school for a decade, called his wife to tell her there had been a shooting just after school and that he had tackled the gunman “but the shooter got a shot off and it hit one of his students,” she said.
Several witnesses described seeing an adult racing at the gunman after the first shot was fired, and a parent confirmed it was Benke. Authorities have yet to confirm those reports.
Benke, who has a doctorate and was a finalist for Colorado Teacher of the Year in 1996, told his wife that he was OK.
