Majority Leader Harry Reid is pressing to extend unemployment benefits and health insurance subsidies for the jobless through December as he and Republicans try to figure out a way to clear the Senate's plate of business left over from last year.
Reid also hopes to keep helping cash-strapped states with their Medicaid budgets, he said Tuesday on the Senate floor.

They are just buying votes until November, and leaving the Repubs a huge problem to deal with.
They know they are toast.
Only a libtard considers constantly extending unemployment benefits a ‘jobs program’.
Why not just call it a gubermint pension?
We'll be so glad when they kick your nose-picking a** out of office.
Permanent unemployment benefits?
$300 a week is not much of a pension. Works out to about $7.50 an hour wage. When you consider that millions of families are having to live on that because there is no work to be had, ya cant be so harsh. Most of the people that are on unemployment at this time are so beat down that they could not afford to move even if they could find work somewhere else. Torches and pitchforks are appropriate.
Yeah, I’ve said for about six months now that the only thing worse for the government than a million people on unemployment is a million people running out of unemployment benefits, and still no job.
I expect unemployment benefits to go on indefinitely, until the economy (and government) completely collapses or things actually turn around, whichever comes first.
Deflation will fix that.
My stepson’s apartment complex last month sent him a notification that if he renews his lease for a year his monthly rent will be $800. It is currently $1,100.
He signed.
how many weeks of unemployment pay is enough?
It’s getting to where I almost wish I had been laid off — a two-year paid vacation might have been fun. :-)
Two years? The way things are going a lot of people will just change over from Unemployment to Social Security!
How many weeks of no jobs is enough?
My single stepson is content to collect his unemployment and work out at the gym all day. His rent is low, he has no bills, so I'm sure this latest announcement from Reid will be music to his ears.
There is certainly somee of that going on, and on the other hand, there are folks trying to keep a family together on $1200 a month from unemployment. When there is no work, there is no work. Perhaps there are some jobs in the cities, but in the rural areas, the work has ground to a halt. There isnt any, and people cannot afford to move. It is a dilemma, especiall with folks with families. I am against taxes and spending as much as the other guy, but what is the alternative when you have 15 million families out of work and you cut off their food? I would propose that you are going to have instant anarchy.
I completely understand that, but I also personally know multiple people who do nothing all day and have turned down jobs because they get paid to be on “vacation”. It’s really unfortunate that some people take advantage of the system because they don’t “feel like” getting a job.
Not sure what the solution is, but it is infuriating to see people do that.
If I were to be laid off, I’d get about $600 a week. I’d run with it for as long as I can while seriously helping my wife with her Arbonne business.
The more of the taxes I’ve paid that I can get back, the better.
The problem is, that the unemployment sets a wage floor. Why even go look for work that pays less than what you can get on unemployment? It doesnt make sense, and with the shutdown on jobs, there is nothing left that will pay a decent wage. Any company that gets an opening already has a whole bunch of people standing in line for it—friends and relatives. Right now, unless a person has someone inside that can pull him/her in to a job, then they simply become one of 2000 people who spend hours filling out applications to have some part time high school kid sort them out. I applied for a good job recently. 3000 people applied for it. The application process is on line, and a computer scans your input.
Once the hiring period was over, they sorted the applications for PHD’s. 2500 or us went down the drain after spending 6 hours filling out their online application.
I found out, that the position had been already filled a month before the position posting was made public. The public posting was for EEO. So, I dont know what the answer is either, but this country is teetering on the edge of some massive unrest.
If there are no jobs, then you tell me.
If no extension is passed by this week, I will get only 26 weeks. 99 weeks is only for those laid off years ago.
