Whether that is why Obama is preventing the document from being released is unknown, but it is one reasonable explanation.

As it turns out, the anonymous source of those rumors, was outed and exposed as a liar who had invented his resume and claim to expertise (that came as no surprise to those of us who have real experience with scanners, and photoshop).

That depends on your definition of "without demand."

The St. Petersburg Times requested Obama's birth certificate in April 2008, but was denied by the campaign (fourth paragraph from the bottom). In June 2008, the campaign released the COLB.

One can argue that the St. Pete Times request was not a demand, but the Obama campaign was asked and did refuse to release the birth certificate several months before the COLB was released.
