I'd skip silver. If you can't eat it, wear it, heat with it, or defend your home with it, it won't have any value.

Every time the "gold bars" thing comes up I ask the obvious :
Aside from becoming the very large magnet for every criminal within 50 miles, what good are gold bars?
And that is the first response I've seen yet that makes sense.
Would you trade a gold bar for 10 pounds of flour or starve?
It seems that lots and lots of folks would rather die "rich."
