Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner Opens Up to "Vogue" ("likes to cook dinner – barefoot")
ABCNews ^ | February 22, 2010 | Matthew Jaffe

ABC News’ Matthew Jaffe reports:

In the first year of the Obama administration, few cabinet secretaries, if any, have had to combat more severe problems and widespread outrage than Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner.

A country battling the worst recession since the Great Depression. A financial system teetering on the brink of collapse. A population furious with Wall Street’s abuses and Washington’s bailouts. A flurry of lawmakers calling for his resignation.

Maybe that’s why Geithner felt the need to apologize to his family even before accepting the position at Treasury.

“When he first took the job, he said he was so sorry to put us through this,” his mother Deborah Geithner says in the upcoming issue of “Vogue”.

Now that Geithner’s first year at Treasury has concluded, his mother acknowledges that watching her son deal with the job’s pitfalls has been “hard” – at one point, she told the magazine, she thought about turning off the volume on her television.

For his part, Geithner says that he focuses on the problems on hand, not on people’s perceptions.

“You can’t do these jobs worrying about perceptions,” Geithner says in the magazine’s profile of him. “You have to focus on improving real things that matter. To consider what is popular will lead you astray and you will have no integrity to do the important things that will make the country stronger.”

A lithe and athletic 48 years old, Geithner … has the kind of looks that can go either way: Half an inch one way he’s John F. Kennedy; half an inch the other he’s Lyle Lovett. In person, he’s friendly, relaxed, and prone to making jokes at his own expense—the first thing he tells me when we sit down is how much ‘shit’ he’s going to get from his friends for doing an interview with Vogue. … Geithner … is very smart, very angry, and more than a little relieved that the economy did not tank further than it has. Indeed, as bad as things look today, it could have been worse. A lot worse. ‘We were starting to have a classic bank run, people were starting to take their money out of banks, something that hadn’t happened since the Great Depression.’

There. Fixed.

I know that it is shallow, but it may not be meaningless. Why are Democrats so physically unattractive?

When you’re filled with self-hate, lack any moral foundation and do not let God into your heart, the result is an ugly one.

He lacks moral fiber.

That explains nothing. There are many beautiful numbskulls. The question is: Why do Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and many other Democrats look like characters from horror movies?

I actually think Vogue would want to protect their own image against the eternally nerdy likes of Tim Geithner. Seriously, magazines are clinging to the financial life jackets and a magazine like Vogue features a total dweeb like Geithner as some sort of denizen of the suave and sophisticated realm of life. Vogue's next issue will all be about why we all should be wearing Mao jackets as the epitome of individuality.
