Spirited gun-sale showdown at Kensington shop protest(PA)

Perhaps emboldened by its headway in protests against the old Colosimo's Gun Center, an interfaith group rallied yesterday against a new target - the Shooter Shop in Kensington.

This time, though, the demonstrators ran into an opposing force: a contingent of pro-gun counterprotesters.

It all added up to a lively demonstration of the First Amendment and a quarrel over the Second Amendment as the sides each mustered about 40 protesters outside the gun shop, on Allegheny Avenue.

When the antigun advocates from Heeding God's Call went into silent prayer, the pro-gun folks sang "God Bless America." When the antigun folks sang a hymn, an opponent shouted, "Long live the Second Amendment."

The Rev. Fred Kauffman, a Mennonite pastor and leader of Heeding God's Call, told his faithful that gun dealers such as the Shooter Shop could do much more to make sure they are "not feeding the illegal gun market."

Kauffman and his band are urging gun shops to sign a 10-point pledge calling for shops to be more vigilant in spotting "straw purchasers" who buy guns in bulk for resale to criminals.

To buttress its case, Heeding God's Call cited a 2004 study that identified the 120 gun dealers in America - out of 80,000 registered sellers - that had each sold at least 200 guns traced to crimes.

Gun traces have no statistical significance about whether a gun shop follows the law.

If my math is correct that means 0.015% of all REGISTERED gun sellers in the US were allegedly involved in selling guns to criminals.

Let me repeat that: 0.015%

Wow, great statistic to pull out in a debate. That statistic does nothing but prove that Heeding God's Call arguments are fallacious and invalid.

Not exactly what is being alleged here. They don't actually say that the gun shops sold to criminals — they say that the gun shops sold guns that were traced to crimes which is a whole 'nother thing. But I imagine that the gun grabbers hope that nobody notices that.

Just imagine the same criterion applied to car dealers. Have any of them have sold cars that have been "traced to crimes"? And what exactly are they supposed to do about it if they have?

A Preacher/Pastor should himself be armed. How better to help protect ones flock from wolves?

The people that don’t like guns, just don’t like guns. Any number they can pull out of the air is an excuse for them to exercise their 1st Amendment rights. As stupid as it seems for them to use the above inconsequential statistics, they would even sound stupider saying the truth: “We don’t want anyone to have guns, because we are afraid of and don’t like guns, and we are against your 2nd amendment rights because we are afraid of and just don’t like guns.”

These Mennonites are probably real good folks, lead by a good fellow that is a bit paranoid, and they don’t realize that atheism (or religious persecution) awaits them if they get rid of the 2nd amendment and then the 1st is lost. The news for them is “Pacifism is NOT a component of freedom, religious or otherwise.”

Yes, Mennonites are usually good people. I asked one that I know quite well, how they could justify relying on people who were willing to be violent for their protection. Her reply was that God provided the police, army and others who would protect them.

Ah, where did God say that you shouldn't defend yourself, protect your life that the lives of your family, friends, neighbors and countrymen? When did He say that?

If you want to see what Jewish Law was at the time Jesus was alive, check out Jews for the Protection of Firearms Ownership website - JPFO.org

And it wasn't to disarm yourself against assorted thugs, gangster, criminals and tin-horn despots. That's how I would talk with these misinformed Christians.
