Maybe the childhood was worse than we know and so they faked it? It would take A LOT of $ and influence to create a totally fake jacket.
Hey, now that the NY Times has published it and claimed it to be authentic, maybe someone could go to town, do some photography forensics, and challenge them on it. (Though I don’t know that it’s not legit—I could believe that a 6’ Obama was only capable of playing basketball with prepubescent 5-footers when he was in high school.)
Bout that time of his life he was in Indonesia. These don´t look like Indonesians boys to me.

How often do you see a posed photo like that where not only the kid front and center, but the dude in the middle up in the bleachers, too, is holding a ball?
And the latter is not holding it out for the photo either.
The NYT says it’s from the 1977 yearbook of the Punahou school.
There’s gotta be a copy somewhere, like the school library.
This is clearly a fake. Look closely. That’s John Lovitz in the last row on the left.
Do any of the other team members remember him? What about his high school yearbooks are there other pictures of him? If I had gone to school with someone who later became POTUS I would certainly have looked him up in my yearbook and be very public about at least having gone to school with him. Obama is like the man who never was as no one from his grade and high school days seems to remember him. This photo IMHO looks like a fake unless someone else in the photo can attest to its veracity.

If this was from the yearbook in the school library, the fix is or was in a long time ago- maybe if someone from Punahou class of 1977 has an untampered yearbook, we’ll see
ditto with “real” yearbooks from Columbia and Harvard
