At one year, Mass. healthcare plan falls short (can we even call it romneycare anymore?)
Boston Globe ^ | May 15, 2007 | Sally Pipes

MASSACHUSETTS'S UNIVERSAL healthcare law turned one in April. To survive, its guardians have had to make many changes, each of which has increased current and future government spending, increased the government's role in regulating the healthcare market, decreased individual responsibility to purchase insurance, and made certain that the plan will fall far short of achieving universal coverage.

The promise of the law was simple and seductive: Require people to purchase health insurance, make the insurance affordable, or at least tax-deductible, and then fine those who don't comply. Subsidies could come from the current money devoted to the Uncompensated Care Pool and the federal taxpayers. Universal coverage, then, would be achieved with little new spending.

Numerous problems existed with this plan, but the fairy tale quality appealed to politicians and the national media, so it passed to much fanfare.

Interestingly, the Commonwealth Health Insurance Connector Authority, the bureaucrats in charge of implementing the plan, decided that the universal individual mandate does not apply to everyone, but rather only those who can afford the premiums. Therefore, nearly one in five of the currently uninsured will be exempt from the law.

The Connector Board also bowed to pressure and reduced the monthly premiums on the subsidized-but-not-entirely-free healthcare plans. This will increase the program's costs by $13 million.

Even at these reduced rates, the plans will still not be attractive to many. People earning between 151 percent and 300 percent of the federal poverty limit -- $25,000 to $110,000 for families and $15,316 to $50,000 for individuals -- are expected to pay up to 9.6 percent of their income on insurance premiums, or pay fines. (This 9.6 percent is before any co pays and cost sharing.) Meanwhile, taxpayers are still subsidizing them by as much as 94 percent of total costs.

You assume changes were made. You also assume that if there (and there were some), that Mitt would not still claim it a success (he does)

Yet after signing this POS into MA Law he thinks he’s electable as a Conservative.

I guess he figures if Americans are stupid enough to give the insane algore the popular vote, elect Clinton twice, and put a communist crypto-muslim of dubious nationality in the WH this time around he stands a fair shot.

10 years ago he would have gotten away with it, not now though.

PROOF RomneyCARE AND ObamaCARE are Disasters
(and Romney is utterly clueless)

“Mr. Romney's subsidized coverage is meanwhile doing what entitlements do: crowding
out private insurers, compounding the cost explosion, walking the state toward rationing.
So long as the former governor clings to these central points of his health plan, he's on
the wrong side of free-market policy and public opinion.

This isn't going away for Mr. Romney either, which is why he'd do better by writing off
his own plan as a mistake that Democrats have made worse, and replacing it with a
proposal that deregulates and reforms the private market to lower insurance costs
(thereby achieving greater coverage).”

From CATO (the whole article is worthwhile): “Before RomneyCare was enacted, estimates of the number of uninsured in
Massachusetts ranged from 372,000 to 618,000. Under the new program, about 219,000
previously uninsured residents have signed up for insurance. Of these, 133,000 are
receiving subsidized coverage, proving once again that people are all too happy to accept
something “for free,” and let others pay the bill. That is in addition to 56,000 people who
have been signed up for Medicaid. The bigger the subsidy, the faster people are signing
up. Of the 133,000 people who have signed up for insurance since the plan was
implemented, slightly more than half have received totally free coverage.

Romneycare is a disaster, as most of us knew it would be.

I think the last estimate had the cost overrun somewhere in the neighborhood of $800 million for this fiscal year. I anticipate it will reach a billion very soon, probably around the time we have our own California-type budget coronary.

Then it will become clear to anyone with some sense of logic and reason (that excludes moonbats) that Romneycare is no different than any other socialist medicine program. Either services will be greatly reduced and rationed (particularly for those who get their insurance through the state, i.e., MassHealth) or taxes have to go up on those of us who work to pay our private insurance. Gee, wonder which option the pigs on Bacon Hill will choose?

Frankly, I say we do what another state (Tennessee?) did, and scrap the whole program.

halfamazing, huh?

Good research from 2007.

Did your research by chance reveal this one from 2009? Romney Gives Mass. Health Reform An 'A'. (July 9, 2009)

Okay, follow me here. If Mitt, on July 9, 2009, gives it an "A" and says "It’s working like we had hoped it would work," that pretty much negates anything in 2007 or when the bill was being debated and signed. He loves it now, in its current form!

One more item of research? He loves it so much he commissioned a $30,000 portrait to highlight it as "his greatest achievement!"

The portrait depicts the governor seated at the front edge of his desk wearing his trademark business suit. Beside him is a small framed photo of his wife, Ann, and ... [wait for it] ... a copy of the health care reform law he called his greatest achievement. [note to mittbots; since this was June, 2009, this means he claims credit and praises the disaster of a healthcare plan the MASS Dems produced]

Tennessee has Tenncare thanks to a demonrat...and it is a FAILURE too.

Rename, repackage, rewrite it a tad smaller, and sell another pig in a poke.

Tennessee has joined several other states in trying to pass a Health Care Freedom Act. NO COLAs for granny, retired Military or retired fed employees. BIG NEW fees for Tricare for Life retired over 65 Military's secondary health ins. (DOD bill already passed, delayed but goes into effect 2011)

TRI CARE FOR LIFE This from a google search:

http://economicspolitics.blogspot.com/2009/05/tricare-for-life-is-obama-trying-to.html

This option would help reduce the costs of TFL, as well as costs for Medicare, by introducing minimum out-of pocket requirements for beneficiaries. Under this option, TFL would not cover any of the first $525 of an enrollee’s cost-sharing liabilities for calendar year 2011 and would limit coverage to 50 percent of the next $4,725 in Medicare cost sharing that the beneficiary incurred. (Because all further cost sharing would be covered by TFL, enrollees could not pay more than $2,888 in cost sharing in that year.)

Congress plans to block Tricare fee increases
http://www.armytimes.com/news/2009/10/military_tricarefees_blocked_100709w

By Rick Maze - Staff writer, Oct 7, 2009

Tricare fee increases imposed last week by the Defense Department will be repealed by a provision of the compromise 2010 defense authorization bill unveiled Wednesday by House and Senate negotiators.

Snip

The fee increases were announced on Sept. 30 and took effect on Oct. 1, but the defense bill, HR 2647, includes a provision barring any fee increases until the start of fiscal 2011.

Snip

Retired Army Maj. Gen. Bill Matz, president of the National Association for Uniformed Services, said the announcement of fee increases was shocking considering that the Obama administration promised earlier this year to hold off on any new fee Tricare fee increases until fiscal 2011.

“President Obama and DoD assured NAUS and the entire military family earlier this year that there would rightly be no increases in any Tricare fees” in fiscal 2010, Matz said. “We took them at their word, and I can’t believe that a co-pay increase like this was allowed to go forward,” he added.

Thank you so much for your link. I knew someone around here had more info than what I was able to find.

THe last paragraph in your first link tells me all I need to know. From the article:

============The former governor declined to answer when Harding asked if health care is a right of a privilege in the United States. He did insist, however, that on a national level politicians ought to be able to create a system where every citizen has health insurance.=============

This is incredible. Incredibly dangerous. He insists that politicians ought to be able to create it? Why can’t we keep control over our own lives?

You said:

———————that pretty much negates anything in 2007 or when the bill was being debated and signed. He loves it now, in its current form!————————

I totally agree.
