Thompson encouraged by polls, not ruling out Feingold challenge
The Hill ^ | 2/21/2010 | Sean J. Miller

Former Gov. Tommy Thompson (R-Wis.) is encouraged by polls showing him leading Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.) in a hypothetical matchup.

He hasn’t announced a 2010 Senate run but admits he’s spoken to the head of National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) and several other senators about the possibility.

“It’s a good year for me,” Thompson told The Hill. “The polls are good in Wisconsin and I haven’t even indicated” an intention to run.

Tommy T. has his ups and downs as a conservative, but he'd be a huge improvement over Russ Feingold.

He's a notorious electoral tease, but this article sounds pretty promising for a senate candidacy. And Feingold is pretty clearly running scared. Of the announced candidates, Dave Westlake seems preferable.

It’s a shame that Republicans have to run such elderly pols when they have a chance to take an office. Thompson is now 68 years old.

We just have to keep pulling to the right. Go RINO hunting in primaries but if the RINO wins, come together and club the libs in the general. I held my nose and voted for Christie in NJ and he has been a pleasant surprise.

The question is “does he want it”?

Thompson was a big government spender when he was governor of WI. He also has “crossed the aisle” in his support of the Healthcare bill. He issued a joint statement with Dick Gephardt. I don’t know why this fact continues to be ignored. As a Wisconsonite this is no improvement over Feingold.

Thompson has a ton of money already because he’s been a perennial candidate — raking in dough and then dropping out of the race leaving cash in the bank. IMHO, he is not going to run — just screw it up for other Republicans. For this bad habit, I despise him.

This has been floating out there for a bit. What is the likelihood of Tommy running?

If he runs, I think he wins.

He was an incredibly popular and effective governor. I would rather have him for one or two terms than Feingold for another 10.

I wasn’t knocking him as a man or a pol, but this—and I hope 2012—are once in a generation opportunities to get new blood in and Senatorships are a little like Supreme Court Justices: it’s helpful if you find someone young enough to hold the seat for some time.

No I’m not. Did you read the article? He wrote a joint statement with Dick Gephardt supporting the senate’s healthcare bill. Why would I vote for him when there are other more conservative candidates running for the seat?

Sure, but he’s dashed my hopes too often, so I don’t think it will happen.
