BELTON (February 19, 2010)Bell County Sheriff Dan Smith confirmed Friday that his office and Fort Hood officials have been talking for several weeks about transferring accused Fort Hood gunman Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan from a San Antonio military hospital to the Bell County Jail.
Hasan is charged with 13 counts of murder in the shooting rampage on Nov. 5, 2009 at the posts Soldier Readiness Center that left 13 dead and 29 injured.
He was left paralyzed in an exchange of gunfire with two civilian police officers who are credited with ending the massacre.
For 15 years, the Bell County Jail has had a contract with Fort Hood for housing military prisoners charged under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
Because of this existing contractual relationship, Smith said, Fort Hood has asked me to consider housing Hasan in our jail.
Hasans attorney John Galligan confirmed that the Army wants to move Hasan, but said he would rather his client be transferred either to Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center or to a secure location on post.
Hasan is facing an Article 32 Hearing, the military equivalent of a civilian grand jury review, which will determine whether he stands trial for the deadly shooting
Because of the downsizing of bases throughout the 90s (that continues today), many bases have agreements with local civilian facilities to house service members who are awaiting court-martial at the base. Some bases just don’t have adequate brig/stockade facilities anymore. I suspect it becomes increasingly problematic for a defendant with such medical ailments, FWIW.
As long as they don’t send him to Club Gitmo. Those terrorists down there are getting over like a bunch of fat rats. This guy needs to do a little suffering.
Looks like Texas will have another Death Row POS to send to the here after.
I hope some one puts some Ham in his body bag.
Sadly, after conviction he'll be transferred to Leavenworth to live in what we like to call "the Castle" - the military's version of death row (USDB). He'll "enjoy" his remaining days there until he finally is executed, on site.
Fort Sill, Oklahoma knows how to deal with the likes of that sucker. Send him there. That is the regional Army Correctional facility.
Well, I hope he gets a steady diet of painful beatings for the rest of his miserable life.
Maybe he can have an untimely accident.
Frankly, I'd sooner see him at Club Gitmo, despite the up to date and fully operational status of the Texas death row facilities.
paging Jack Ruby... paging Jack Ruby...
One proble with civilian jails/prisons is that they are a breeding ground for our local radical islam...
Cushy.
Lets make this guy go directly to the principals detention at the nearest public school, and be done with it. Monday and Tuesday afternoon should do.
And, make sure that he is required to get picked up from detention by his defense aclu-type lawyer.
I'm hoping the facility is worse than the 'hole' from "Cool Hand Luke".....and that nobody gives him a baseball mitt - or even a colostomy bag, in his case.
Usually, if a prisoner (military) is jailed on base or post, members of his unit pull 8 hour shifts watching him for suicide attempts etc.
That’s easy to fix.Just make sure he’s in the “Nazi skinhead” cellblock.
Surely they could find a holding cell at Leavenworth for this guy.
Apologies if that’s already been suggested, I’m really watching UK - Vandy and didn’t read the thread.
In the meantime I hope they can use Helen Thomas photos as pinups in his cell.
federal property....why not use an Army jail?
I wonder if Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan would emulate Robert Redford in The Last Castle.
