Barbour Won't Rule Out 2012 Run

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Published: February 19, 2010

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Indiana Rep. Mike Pence, two possible 2012 presidential candidates, called for a return to conservative principles before a critical constituency Friday, while Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour wouldn't rule out a White House bid of his own.

''If you see me losing 40 pounds that means I'm either running or have cancer,'' quipped Barbour, a former lobbyist and GOP chairman who Republican insiders say could be a formidable candidate.

The head of the Republican Governors' Association, Barbour made the comments to a group of reporters ahead of a weekend meeting of the nation's governors. He said he would focus this year on helping Republicans elected in governor's races. After November, Barbour said, he might considering running. Still, he called the prospect unlikely.

Several Republicans considering running for president were descending on Washington this weekend for the Conservative Political Action Conference and the National Governor's Association meeting, where they were testing the 2012 ground -- even if they wouldn't acknowledge it.

Earlier Friday across town, Pawlenty and Pence were the latest Republicans weighing candidacies to speak to the annual gathering of thousands of conservative activists and leaders who are important players in the GOP base. Barbour made an impromptu stop at the event late Friday. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich were on tap to deliver speeches Saturday.

Your language is more appropriate for the ghetto. If you ever want people to take you seriously, try to act like an adult.

No one on the GOP horizon has a prayer of defeating Obama in 2012. Not Palin, Romney or Huckabee, and certainly not Barbor or the pathetic Pawlenty or Jindal. Things change, but right now it doesn’t look good. We may well have three successive undistinguished presidents who served two terms with weak 2nd terms in which they got little or nothing accomplished. This is how deep and wide was the shadow Ronaldus Magnus cast upon America.

Well Katrina hit Mississippi as bad as Louisiana but for some reason you just don't hear any reports about screwups in the rescue and recovery.

Haley would make a good president.

wow...what an intellectual statement!!! actually he was right, jokes, even in poor taste are jokes, if you don’t like them, don’t laugh but let’s leave the politically correct nonsense to the other side. I have also experienced cancer in my life(who hasn’t) butunless your joke is insulting to a person who cannot respond (special olympics, downs syndrome, extra chromosomes etc) just let it lay...I’ve heard Catholic jokes that were hilarious, and didn’t weaken my faith at all. Jokes that are deliberately damaging to another might be excepted here, but those are few and far between

I was disappointed to read that Barbour as Gov of Mississippi vetoed a emimant domain law that was passed by the MISS house and state senate.

My coworker Bill was diagnosed with ALS a year ago. He was an active, healthy 57 year old with a great sense of humor, Today he is confined to a nursing home with a breathing aid and a feeding tube, He ca no longer walk, use his arms or hands. When I visited him Saturday he said “I would love to come back to work but I don’t have a leg to stand on.” He laughed and I laughed. Funny coming from him, from Joe Biden or Letterman... not so much.

Well if he did run I’d vote for him. He won’t run though, he’s smarter than that, he knows he would have a slim chance. But I like him allot.

I agree fully. (Check my tag line for my own preference)

I always liked Haley, my neice lives in Mississippi and says he is a great governor...When he was head of the rep. party (Steels job right now), he was conservative and made no bones about it. Was great at putting down the democrats in debates......

"Raised in Mobile, Al and live in Huntsville, Al. Some things just aren't funny. I don't care who you are. "

BS, he wasn't degrading anyone or anything, he was talking about himself and his potential for running in 2012 in a descriptive way. You really shouldn't take yourself or life so seriously.

I can see your point, but cancer isn’t something to joke about IMO, right, left, conservative, liberal or whatever.

I nursed my mother the last 6 weeks of her life in my home dying of multiple myloma and my father thought acute leukemia and didn't find the remark offensive.

They were both in terminal stages. Sorry your having a hard time with your loss.. Its not easy....

Perhaps you are correct. My opinion may be jaded by having a bipolar child. I just don't think life changing illnesses/conditions are funny. By all means those who have experienced them have the right to make light, because in reality that is one coping mechanism.

We all have things about which we are passionate.

Michael Young is a shortstop for the Texas Rangers. And he could really screw things up for the GOP.

He probably should have said "tape worm" or cholera. At least he didn't say AIDS.

My Father died 23 years ago, I’ve moved on. I just think cancer is not something to joke about. Again, it’s just one person’s opinion.

I’m sure some of the things I find funny would make many people sick, but I wouldn’t say those things in public.

That being said, Barbour would be a good candidate for the GOP in 2012. I would not let one bad joke cloud my thinking on that matter.
