President Obama will put forward comprehensive health care legislation intended to bridge differences between Senate and House Democrats ahead of a summit meeting with Republicans next week, senior administration officials and Congressional aides said Thursday.
Democratic officials said the presidents proposal was being written so that it could be attached to a budget bill as a way of averting a Republican filibuster in the Senate. The procedure, known as budget reconciliation, would let Democrats advance the bill with a simple majority rather than a 60-vote supermajority.

Days before hosting an intensive health care summit with both Republicans and Democrats, President Barack Obama made a fervent push for his overhaul, calling it critical not just for the millions without insurance but for the entire country's economic well-being. "It is vital for our economy to change how health care works in this country," Obama said Friday at a town hall meeting in a high school gym.

Im reading between the lines, but you dont have to read too closely. Greg Sargent reported a few hours ago that Reid is now openly talking about using reconciliation not only to pass O-Care but to pass a public option too. I still think its a bluff, but thats a provocative bit of muscle-flexing ahead of a meeting with the GOP thats supposedly aimed at compromise and conciliation.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) President Barack Obama is expected to publish his healthcare plan as early as Sunday or Monday, combining features of the two Democratic bills passed by the Senate and House of Representatives, congressional aides and healthcare advocates said on Friday.
The administration's bill will aim to jump-start the stalled healthcare overhaul and comes just days ahead of a planned televised White House summit with congressional Republicans, who are calling on Democrats to scrap the bills and start over with a far less sweeping proposal.

So, President Obama is finally getting around to listening to Republican ideas on health care reform. That's a good thing. But in preparing for Mr. Obama's health care summit, Republicans should keep in mind that this isn't an "It's Academic" session in which the smartest one with all the facts and figures wins.
Rather, the politician who simultaneously appeals to Americans' wants and needs in the emotionally charged arenas of health care and fiscal reform wins.

HENDERSON, Nev. (Associated Press) -- President Barack Obama says Social Security is slowly running out of money but that it can exist well into the future with a slight fix.
The system is funded with a tax on earnings, up to $109,000 a year. Obama says lifting that cap to tax a larger share of income would be one way to extend the system of monthly payments for retirees. It also would be unpopular with some.
