he acted correctly

He acted as the leader he has been all of his life and I'm glad he was there

Our President had just been shot and with calm authority he assured friends and enemies that there was a captain on the bridge and that our ship of state was stable and there was no reason for panic or anxiety

Prayers up for the good General and his family

Haig became a bigtime shill for China. Won’t be missed.

Saw the General at a Marine Ball years ago. I considered it an honor to be in the same room with the man.

There was an author on C-SPAN recently who claimed that during the Nixon administration when Haig was advising Nixon he was secretly undermining Nixon’s Vietnam policy by passing information to people who disagreed with it (at the Pentagon, I think).

“Thank you, Ernest. You have a better memory than I. But that particular phrase has been conveniently left out in order to paint Haig as a grasping villian. Nothing could be further than the truth. He is a great American.”

On the whole I agree. Remember, this was the time when the media ruled the soundbite and took words (and truth) from context. Haig’s full statement doesn’t have the same media focus does it?

Prayers for the General and his family. Thank you sir for your loyal service to our nation.

Sad he went that direction in his later years. Other than that he seems like a very class act.

Constitutionally, gentlemen, you have the President, the Vice President and the Secretary of State in that order, and should the President decide he wants to transfer the helm to the Vice President, he will do so. He has not done that. As of now, I am in control here, in the White House, pending return of the Vice President and in close touch with him. If something came up, I would check with him, of course.

Chairman of the JCS Haig is the kind of guy that can pick up a phone, casualy hint to an operator(and I don’t mean phone operator) as to what needs to be done and it happens.

He was the NATO Supreme Commander (1974–1979)

Haig served as the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) and commander-in-chief of United States European Command (CinCUSEUR), the Commander of NATO forces in Europe, from 1974 to 1979.

A creature of habit, Haig took the same route to SHAPE every day and this pattern of behavior did not go unnoticed by terrorist groups.

On June 25, 1979, Haig was the victim of an assassination attempt in Mons, Belgium.

A land mine blew up under the bridge on which Haig's car was traveling, narrowly missing Haig's car but wounding three of his bodyguards in a following car.

Authorities later attributed responsibility for the attack to the Red Army Faction (RAF).

In 1993 a German Court sentenced Rolf Clemens Wagner, a former RAF member, to life imprisonment for the assassination attempt.

In hospital since Jan. 28th..must be serious, but then he has the ‘good’ Federal Medical care package...the rest of us would be sent to a medicare nursing home...

I always thought the General was ‘tuff’ and I'm sure he is...

Two Silver Stars and Bronze Star for Valor in the Korean War.

Distinguished Service Cross in the Vietnam War..

“inspired his men to fight with previously unimagined power. Although his force was outnumbered three to one, succeeded in inflicting 592 casualties on the Cong...” an excerpt.

Let’s cease with the childish, negative comments about this brave man.

I lost complete respect for him back in 1993 when I was clicking through the channels late one night and found him cracking jokes about Reagan while he tried to whore his book on Whoopi Goldberg's talk show. It was really awkward trying to figure out who was more uncomfortable, Haig in the lair of the liberal queen, or Goldberg, completely flummoxed at the idea that this was the best she could do in the way of guests.

It was the beginning of the Incident Command System, perfected under GWB. It is actually a very important idea and has nothing to do with policy, has everything to do with respond, react, recover.

I thought he was a dufus when that happened too, but today I know better. He is a good American. Prayers for the General and his family...
